Round window membrane rupture following blunt force trauma
Ann R Coll Surg Engl. 2022 Jan;104(1):e12-e13. doi: 10.1308/rcsann.2021.0056.ABSTRACTRound window rupture following barotrauma such as diving and air travel is well documented. However, we describe a case of round window rupture following a slap to the ear, which has not been described previously. A 12-year-old boy was slapped by his teacher in rural Nepal over his left ear and immediately noted hearing loss. There was no dizziness or tinnitus. Hearing Evaluation of ARthroplasty Surgeons: results from the HEARS study
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hearing loss among arthroplasty surgeons is significantly higher than in their non-surgical colleagues. Noise generated during arthroplasty surgery should be recognised and managed to create safer working conditions.PMID:33956515 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2021.0050

Meni ère's disease treated by grommet insertion.
CONCLUSIONS: Early grommet insertion with transtympanic steroid injection, combined with customised vestibular physiotherapy, may provide an alternative first-line strategy for MD, preventing further true MD attacks. In some patients, it may significantly improve hearing thresholds. PMID: 31508988 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A rare case of Schneiderian papilloma of the middle ear presenting with pulsatile tinnitus.
We present a rare case of a 53-year-old man presenting with unilateral pulsatile tinnitus, otorrhoea, aural fullness, pruritis and hearing loss. Angiography was employed to exclude a glomus tumour and the patient underwent a modified radical mastoidectomy. Tissue samples confirmed a histological diagnosis of ISP of the middle ear. Follow-up magnetic resonanc imaging one year postoperatively showed no evidence of disease recurrence. PMID: 29607726 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A case series of a magnetic bone conduction hearing implant.
The objective of the study was to retrospectively review the postoperative outcomes of patients from a single centre who were implanted with a magnetic bone conduction hearing implant system. The medical and audiological case notes of all patients (n = 34) in a tertiary referral centre ENT department who had been implanted with a Baha® 4 Attract System between October 2013 and April 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. The main outcome measures were use of the aid and complications from implantation or use of the aid. Results indicated that 23 patients had no significant postoperative problems; 5 required an alteration in ...
