Association of age-related hearing loss, tinnitus, and chronic low back pain in middle-aged and older Korean adults
by Hye-Mi Noh, Yi Hwa Choi, Jee Hye Wee, Hong Ji Song, Hye-Ji An, Keum Ji Kim, Soo Kyung Lee, Min Soo Jang, Nayoung Yeon This was a cross-sectional study conducted to evaluate the association between hearing impairment and low back pain (LBP) using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 5,504 middle-aged and older Korean adults (aged ≥50 years old) who underwent plain rad iography of the lumbar spine and pure tone audiometry were included. The presence of LBP was evaluated using a questionnaire, which included a question on whether the patient had experienced LBP that lasted fo...

The impact of tinnitus on adult cochlear implant recipients: A mixed-method approach
ConclusionThe qualitative analysis showed that tinnitus can affect everyday life of CI recipients in various ways and highlighted the heterogeneity in their tinnitus experiences. The survey findings extended this to show that tinnitus impact, related difficulties, and management strategies often depend on sound processor use. This exploratory sequential mixed-method study provided a better understanding of the potential benefits of sound processor use, and thus of intracochlear electrical stimulation, on the impact of tinnitus.

The study of antecedent clinical manifestations of hypertensive heart disease in cohort of hypertension
Aging (Albany NY). 2023 Feb 19;15. doi: 10.18632/aging.204510. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypertensive heart disease presents increasing morbidity and mortality worldwide, however, the data about its epidemics and its specific symptoms in hypertension patients is scarce. To assess the frequency and correlated symptoms of hypertensive heart disease, 800 hypertension patients were randomly recruited for this study per the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology. The diagnosis of heart disease and its typical symptoms (palpitation and angina) were analyzed for the frequency of hypertensive heart disease in hyperte...

Prevalence of visual snow and relation to attentional absorption
by Rui Miguel Costa, Pedro Campos, Madalena Wiborg, Catarina Reb ôlo, Marc Wittmann, Jürgen Kornmeier Visual snow is a condition of unclear prevalence characterized by tiny flickering dots throughout the entire visual field. It appears to result from visual cortex hyperactivity and possibly correlates with propensity to be engrossed in sensory and imaginary experiences (absorption). The prevalence and correlates of visual snow, and emotional reactions to it, were explored in the general Portuguese population with three studies with online surveys. In Study 1, 564 participants were shown an animated graphic simulation of...

Alterations in auditory brain stem response distinguish occasional and constant tinnitus
CONCLUSIONS Our results support the hypothesis that the transition from occasional to constant tinnitus is accompanied by neuronal changes in the midbrain leading to a persisting tinnitus, which is then less likely to remit.FUNDING This study was supported by the GENDER-Net Co-Plus Fund (GNP-182), the European Union’s Horizon 2020 grants no. 848261 (Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus [UNITI]) and no. 722046 (European School for Interdisciplinary Tinnitus Research [ESIT]).

Temporomandibular Disorders and Oral Features in Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIMs) Patients: An Observational Study
Conclusion: The data collected from this observational study seem to support the existence of a relationship between the prevalence of TMD symptoms and signs as well as oral features in patients with myositis. A remarkable reduction of salivary flow and dysphagia were more frequent and severe in IIM patients, as well as muscle contracture and myofacial pain evoked by palpation, this result being highly significant.PMID:34400886 | PMC:PMC8364457 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.45226
