Bilateral Panuveitis Mimicking Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease following the First Dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Vaccine
CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral panuveitis mimicking Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease can develop shortly after the first dose of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine. Ophthalmologists should consider bilateral panuveitis as a presumed post-vaccination adverse event. Systemic steroid therapy may be effective for the nCoV-19 vaccine-associated panuveitis.PMID:35113750 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2022.2026410

Audiological Patterns in Patients with Autoimmune Hearing Loss
Conclusions: A bilateral, simultaneous, and progressive hearing loss combined with downsloping audiogram occurred more often in patients with AIHL. Bilateral simultaneous SSHL with recurrences represents the worse prognostic form of AIHL.Audiol Neurotol

Treatment of Long-term Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss as an Otologic Migraine Phenomenon
Objectives: To describe a cohort of patients presenting with long-term sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) treated with prophylactic migraine and intratympanic steroid therapy. Methods: Patients presenting to a neurotology clinic at least 6 weeks from SSNHL onset were included. All patients received migraine prophylactic medication (nortriptyline, topiramate, and/or verapamil) and lifestyle changes for at least 6 weeks, as well as intratympanic steroid injections, if appropriate. Results: Twenty-one patients (43% female) with a mean age of 64 ± 11 years who presented 9 ± 8 months (...

A Case of Incus Necrosis Following Oral and Intratympanic Steroid Administration for Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Conclusion: We report the first case of possible steroid-induced necrosis of the long process of the incus. Owing to its tenuous blood supply, the incus may be predisposed to steroid-induced osteonecrosis similar to that of the femoral head.

Objective Verification of Acute Tinnitus and Validation of Efficacy of Systemic Steroids in Rats.
CONCLUSION: An acute tinnitus model with minimal structural changes by noise exposure was set up, and used to verify tinnitus objectively by measuring the GPIAS value. Steroid therapy for control of tinnitus was validated in this animal model. PMID: 32242342 [PubMed - in process]

Early Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Patients With Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss in an Emergency Setting
Conclusion: Patients affected by ISSHL with associated vertigo show a higher likelihood of having a positive MR imaging, which, in turn, seems to predict an unfavorable outcome.

Patient-reported involvement of the eighth cranial nerve in giant cell arteritis
ConclusionSymptoms of eighth nerve dysfunction are present in over half of patients with GCA. Recovery with steroids was predicted by concurrence with headache in terms of both timing and location. It appears that eighth nerve involvement, especially acute hearing loss, is a not infrequent feature of GCA and often responds well to steroid therapy. Clinicians should enquire about these symptoms when evaluating a patient for possible GCA.Key Points• Deafness is a frequent presenting feature of giant cell arteritis.• Vertigo, tinnitus and loss of balance are also often reported by GCA sufferers.• Steroid therapy is more...

Neurosarcoidosis Occurring 6 Years after Onset of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease
We report a case of the concurrence of VKHD and sarcoidosis, which may share a common pathophysiology. Accumulation of further similar cases is necessary to elucidate the precise mechanism underlying the concurrence of these two diseases.Case Rep Ophthalmol 2019;10:32 –40

Significance of 1 kHz Pure-tone Threshold in Acute Low-frequency Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Conclusions: Risk factors for poor hearing recovery in ALFHL included longer symptom duration and 1 kHz involvement. In ALFHL with such risk factors, combination therapy was more effective than oral steroid therapy.

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss in dialysis patients.
Authors: Kang SM, Lim HW, Yu H Abstract Although sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) affects chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients more frequently than non-CKD patients, few reports have described SSNHL in dialysis patients. We aimed to review the characteristics of SSNHL in chronic dialysis patients and evaluate treatment responses to steroid therapy. We retrospectively reviewed the records of dialysis patients diagnosed with idiopathic SSNHL at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2014. Pure tone and speech audiometry analyzes were performed before and 2 weeks and 2 months after treatme...

Wide-field fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography findings in the eyes with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease
ConclusionsEyes with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease had peripheral chorioretinal vascular leakage and choroidal vessel narrowing in the acute phase. Wide-field angiography is a useful tool to reveal peripheral chorioretinal findings and assess diameters and density of choroidal vessels.

Combined Intratympanic and Systemic Use of Steroids as a First-Line Treatment for Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized, Controlled Trials
Conclusion: CT seems to confer a certain degree of benefit as a primary treatment of SSNHL as compared with SST. Further validation based on high quality studies is required.

Hearing Changes After Intratympanically Applied Steroids for Primary Therapy of Sudden Hearing Loss: A Meta-analysis Using Mathematical Simulations of Drug Delivery Protocols
Conclusion: During primary intratympanic or combined steroid therapy of idiopathic sudden hearing loss, the tendency toward early treatment having a positive effect on hearing improvement is thought to be a “sham effect,” likely related to spontaneous recovery. Change in pure-tone average may not be an adequate outcome parameter to assess effectiveness of the intervention, as it depends on the degree of initial hearing loss. Final pure-tone average provides a better alternative.
