Treatment of overweight: Is metabolically healthy obesity a worthwhile initial goal?
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) More and more people suffer from diseases associated with morbid overweight. Despite the health risks, only some of those affected attempt to lose weight. Many people are most probably daunted by the prospect of losing the required large amount of weight. Researchers of the German Center for Diabetes Research now report in The Lancet Diabetes& Endocrinology that metabolically healthy obesity could be a worthwhile initial goal in the therapy of obesity.

Enzyme produced in the liver promotes obesity, fatty liver disease and insulin resistance
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) In mice that are given a high-fat diet, an increased production of the enzyme DPP4* by the liver promotes an increase in body fat, the development of fatty liver disease and insulin resistance. These were the findings of a current study by DZD-researchers in Potsdam and T ü bingen.

Nearly 1 in 4 hospitalized patients has diabetes
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) One in four patients in a university hospital suffers from diabetes (22 percent), and again as many suffer from prediabetes (24 percent). These were the findings of a current study by researchers in T ü bingen of the German Center for Diabetes Research and Helmholtz Zentrum M ü nchen. Further results of the study: patients with diabetes have prolonged hospital stays and a higher risk of complications.

Organ crosstalk: Fatty liver can cause damage to other organs
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) Scientists of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) in T ü bingen discovered that a fatty liver can cause damage to other organs. In two just-published studies they demonstrate the effects of fatty liver disease on the function of the hormone-producing islet cells in the pancreas and on renal function.

How insulin in the brain may suppress the subjective feeling of hunger
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) Insulin in the brain may help regulate the hunger sensation and improve functional connectivity in certain cognitive brain regions (default-mode network, DMN *) as well as in the hippocampus and hypothalamus. This is the finding of a new study by researchers at the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) in T ü bingen.

Pizza, burgers and the like: A single high-fat meal can damage the metabolism
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) The global proliferation of overweight and obese people and people with type 2 diabetes is often associated with the consumption of saturated fats. Scientists have found that even the one-off consumption of a greater amount of palm oil reduces the body's sensitivity to insulin and causes increased fat deposits as well as changes in the energy metabolism of the liver.

Epigenetic changes promote development of fatty liver in mouse and man
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) Mice with a strong tendency to obesity already exhibit epigenetic changes at six weeks of age, inducing the liver to amplify its production of the enzyme DPP4 and release it into the circulation. Over the long term, this favors the development of a fatty liver. Such changes in DNA methylation are also detectable in humans with fatty liver and suggest a similar causal chain.

High-protein diets reduce liver fat
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) According to a new nutritional study conducted by the German Institute of Human Nutrition on individuals with type 2 diabetes, high-protein diets reduced liver fat by up to 48 percent within six weeks. It did not matter whether the diet was mainly based on plant or animal protein.

Mutations in FTO and dopamine receptor genes increase risk of obesity and diabetes
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) In the development of obesity and diabetes, signals from the brain play an important role. Here an important neurotransmitter is dopamine. DZD scientists from T ü bingen and Munich, together with Swedish and American colleagues, have investigated how mutations in the obesity risk gene FTO and variants of the dopamine D2 receptor gene interact. Their results suggest that people in whom both genes are altered have a higher risk of developing obesity and diabetes.

Updated DIfE -- German diabetes risk test optimized for mobile devices
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) The German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE) has updated the online version of its German Diabetes Risk Score and has optimized it for mobile devices. The test now takes into account the familial predisposition and is immediately accessible free of charge at http://drs.dife.de/. The update is based on scientific results that the researchers at DIfE published jointly with colleagues from the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice.

All sugars are not alike: Isomaltulose better than table sugar for type 2 diabetes patients
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) Like sucrose (table sugar), the natural disaccharide isomaltulose (PalatinoseTM) consists of glucose and fructose, but it is apparently more suitable for people with type 2 diabetes with regard to regulating blood glucose levels. The favorable metabolic effect of isomaltulose is due to the almost opposing release profiles of the gut hormones GLP-1 and GIP. This has now been shown in a study by the German Center for Diabetes Research.

Height influences risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer
(Deutsches Zentrum fuer Diabetesforschung DZD) Scientists at the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the Harvard School of Public Health describe the relationship of the worldwide increase in height with the development of leading chronic non-communicable diseases in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Tall people have a lower risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, but a higher risk of cancer. The authors discuss which dietary factors and other mechanisms may explain these associations.
