Scientists discover a protein that naturally enhances wheat resistance to head scab
(American Phytopathological Society) Fusarium Head Blight is caused by a fungus that produces heat-stable trichothecene mycotoxins, which help the disease spread. To stop the spread, plant breeders are working to develop cultivars with improved resistance to FHB. A team of plant pathologists primarily based at Rutgers University recently generated wheat overexpressing two non-specific lipid transfer proteins and found that this enhanced protection against the fungus and led to a reduction of one of the major mycotoxins.

Researchers show new holistic approach to genetics and plant breeding
(University of Copenhagen - Faculty of Science) A group of researchers has discovered a new approach to cereal plant breeding that takes into account the internal " calculator " of plant seeds that makes them continuously reorganize themselves (global coherence). The approach includes unforeseen and unintended changes in the plant when genetically manipulated by the plant breeders. The researchers expect that the method can be used to improve the world's crops much more efficiently.

Study of chilli genetics could lead to greater variety on our plates
(University of Bath) Scientists investigating the genetics of chilli pepper species have discovered a whole host of new chilli hybrids that can be grown by crossing domesticated peppers with their wild cousins. This will allow plant breeders to create new varieties that have better disease resistance and could increase productivity.

The lambs break their silence
(Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit ä t M ü nchen) A study of ancient bones shows that Early Neolithic sheep-breeders were faced with high levels of mortality among young animals in their herds. Poking the paradigm
(University of California - Santa Barbara) Deprive a mountain range of its wolves, and soon the burgeoning deer population will strip its slopes bare. " I now suspect that just as a deer herd lives in mortal fear of its wolves, so does a mountain live in mortal fear of its deer, " wrote ecologist Aldo Leopold in his landmark 1949 title " A Sand County Almanac.
