Alberta slaughterhouse to close temporarily amid growing COVID-19 outbreak that has claimed one life
The Olymel pork-processing plant in Red Deer, Alta., announced Monday it would temporarily shut down due to a rapidly growing COVID-19 outbreak at the facility. The news comes nearly three weeks after the death of 35-year-old Darwin Doloque, an employee at the plant.

Fields of breeders' dreams: A team effort toward targeted crop improvements

'You say tomato, I say genomics': Genome sequences for two wild tomato ancestors
(University of Tsukuba) A research team led by University of Tsukuba has produced genome sequences for two wild species of tomato from South America, ancestors of the cultivated tomato. The ancestral species contain thousands of genes that are not present in modern types. The novel genes will help plant breeders produce new tomatoes with features like improved disease resistance, increased tolerance for the changing climate, and improved flavor and shelf-life.

New study reveals how fences hinder migratory wildlife in the West
(University of California - Berkeley) Wildlife biologists at the University of California, Berkeley, combined GPS location data of tagged mule deer and pronghorn antelope with satellite imagery of Wyoming fences to find out just how often these animals encounter fences, and what happens when they do. The results, published on Jan. 7, 2021 in the Journal of Applied Ecology, help pinpoint which fences pose the biggest barrier to ungulates trying to access their ideal habitat.
