DR Congo, Ituri. Fleeing War, Weaving Life in IDP Camps of Bunia
The man reading is a displaced man in the IDP camp ISP in Bunia. Credit: Elena L. Pasquini By Elena L. PasquiniROME, Jul 29 2021 (IPS) He moves aside the curtain, thin as gauze, and then bends over. The darkness dazzles for a few seconds when one enters the house—actually, a den made of earth where air and light filter through the narrow entrance. Jean de Dieu Amani Paye holds her tiny baby, wrapped in an elegant fabric, in his arms. He was a teacher of French and Latin and had a small business. He also cultivated the land: cassava, corn, sorghum, and beans. Now he is a leader of the ISP camp on the outskirts of Bunia, ...

Author interview: Diagnostic test accuracy of telehealth assessment for dementia and mild cognitive impairment
In this study, 71% of participants who had MCI were correctly identified using telehealth assessment, as were 97% of those who had any cognitive diagnosis (either MCI or dementia), but only 22% of those who had no cognitive diagnosis at face-to-face assessment. However, the latter result was especially uncertain because there were so few patients in this category. It is important to note that diagnoses of dementia and MCI made by two specialists seeing patients face-to-face will not show 100% agreement. Therefore, perfect agreement between telehealth and face-to-face assessments cannot be expected. The larger Australian s...

Pure folly: Turing family join fight to save ‘blue-skies maths’ from neglect
As hard-pressed universities axe abstract study, the codebreaker ’s great niece and top mathematicians are fighting backAlmost exactly 80 years ago, British codebreakers made a crucial breakthrough. Using methods developed by the mathematical genius of Alan Turing, they were able to decipher the Enigma code that the Nazis were using on the eastern front in the second world war, gaining another crucial advantage for the allies.Yet even as Turing ’s contribution has begun to beaccorded its proper importance, there are growing concerns among Britain ’s most prominent mathematicians – and Turing’s own family – that...

We Used to Have a Lyme Disease Vaccine. Are We Ready to Bring One Back?
At my animal hospital in upstate New York, an epicenter of the U.S. tick epidemic, my dog Fawn lets out a whimper as the veterinarian injects her with her annual Lyme disease shot. I roll my eyes. She doesn’t know how good she has it. The injection means that if a tick bites her (and in rural New York, a tick always does), the creepy crawly will feast on dog blood that’s been supercharged with a Lyme bacteria-killing substance, and Lyme disease won’t be transmitted to Fawn. I wish I could be shot up with that superpower. Currently, there is no human vaccine for Lyme disease—even though more than two...
