Pure promethium: ORNL extracts in-demand isotope from plutonium leftovers
(DOE/Oak Ridge National Laboratory) An ORNL team has devised a way to extract Pm-147 from the liquid runoff left after Pu-238 production. This reduces radioactive elements that must be disposed of but also, if sustainable, could establish a domestic supply of Pm-147, for which there is already demand. NIH Director Francis Collins Is Fighting This Coronavirus While Preparing for the Next One
In May 2020, Dr. Francis Collins, the longtime head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was called to the White House to meet with Jared Kushner, the then President’s son-in-law and adviser, and Dr. Deborah Birx, the head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
