The Tragedies of 2017 Will Test the Bonds That Connect Us, Now and for Years to Come
If you could see grief on a map, there would be rings of anguish radiating from whole regions of the U.S. right now. From Texas to Florida to Puerto Rico and Las Vegas, the hurt would expand with each person affected to the people they’re connected with in all parts of the country. No state would remain untouched by the events of 2017. The magnitude of the suffering over the past few months is unfathomable to those who haven’t spent time in a war zone or in countries where nature’s most brutal assaults are even more frequent. Houston and Florida are still reeling from sequential hurricanes. Puerto Rico ha...

Angular momentum-induced delays in solid-state photoemission enhanced by intra-atomic interactions
Attosecond time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals that photoemission from solids is not yet fully understood. The relative emission delays between four photoemission channels measured for the van der Waals crystal tungsten diselenide (WSe2) can only be explained by accounting for both propagation and intra-atomic delays. The intra-atomic delay depends on the angular momentum of the initial localized state and is determined by intra-atomic interactions. For the studied case of WSe2, the photoemission events are time ordered with rising initial-state angular momentum. Including intra-atomic electron-electron intera...

‘This Is All We Can Do’: How the Japanese Are Preparing for a North Korean Nuclear Attack
The wail of the emergency siren reverberates across the school’s playing field, conjuring a primal fear even before the words “Missile launched! Missile launched!” crackle over the loudspeaker. Two dozen men, women and children—many wearing bonnets and wet neck towels against the blazing sunshine—scamper across the shingle expanse before squatting down low with arms covering heads. “We haven’t got a nuclear shelter or even strong buildings, so this is all we can do,” says Nakamura Takashi, an official of Sakura City in Japan’s central Tochigi Prefecture, who helped to o...

Learning from our Lotte
Sam, Lotte and Caroline Parenting is a messy adventure – it tests our patience, our will and our energy, but never our concern, love or passion for our children. With three kids under 10, my wife, Caroline, and I have managed broken noses, split lips, cuts and bruises too numerous to count … even Lyme disease, skin disorders, and serious fevers – most seem to come with the territory. But there have been rare moments when one of our kids was sick and we didn’t know what was wrong or how to ease the pain, and in those moments, we felt pretty desperate. One of those times was when our 4-year-old daughter Charlotte or ...

Emergency Physician Rhiana Ireland Helps Hundreds in the Wake of Harvey
When Harvey hit, I found out that the small church near me had volunteered to take in 100 people. The church is an official Red Cross center, and the only one for League City, Texas. Initially, they were only able to send three volunteers to staff it. This city has over 100,000 people in it.  When people searched for a place to go, this church was the only one listed for the entire city and they poured in. So I decided to offer my services as an emergency physician. We had 200 cots, so the church agreed to take 200 people.   Like the rain, what started in drips turned into a torrent of people: soaking wet, clut...

News From the Society
When post-acute and long-term care practitioners get together, they can accomplish great things. That can be a challenge when you live in Hawaii, where you might be hundreds of miles from colleagues. However, Aida Wen, MD, CMD, Hawaii Medical Directors Association president, has found a way to unite colleagues for education, information exchange, and — most recently — a focus on antibiotic stewardship. And she has done this with help from AMDA – the Society of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, and some user-friendly technology.
