Flash Flood in Arizona Kills 9
TONTO NATIONAL FOREST, Ariz. (AP) — The flash flood that killed nine people in an Arizona river canyon began its deadly descent as an impressive but avoidable surge of churning water, black with cinders from a recent wildfire and choked with tumbling tree trunks and limbs. By the time it reached a rocky swimming hole several miles downstream, it was a roaring torrent 6 feet (1.8 meters) high, and an extended family celebrating a birthday while seeking refuge from the summer heat had no warning — and no chance to escape. The bodies were found up to 2 miles (3 kilometers) away. Five other people were rescued, some of the...

Arizona Flash Floods Kill 5 Children, 4 Adults
TONTO NATIONAL FOREST, Ariz. (AP) — Adults, teens and children as young as 2 were enjoying a summer afternoon by cooling off in an Arizona creek when the gentle waters turned deadly. The group from the Phoenix and Flagstaff areas had met Saturday for a day trip along a popular swimming hole near Payson, about 100 miles (160.9 kilometers) northeast of the capital. They set up lounge chairs not knowing an intense thunderstorm was dumping heavy rainfall just upstream in the Tonto National Forest. The storm unleashed 6-foot-high floodwaters, dark with ash from a summer wildfire, onto the unsuspecting family and friends. The ...

We Know How To Curb Epidemics. Can Alzheimer's Be Next?
I travel a lot, which means I spend much of my time in airports waiting to catch a flight. I use most of that time to work or catch up on email, but sometimes, when it’s really early in the morning or really late at night, I just sit at the gate and watch the people go by. And not too long ago I saw something that broke my heart. It was a couple my age, maybe a few years older. They were making their way to the gate. They were ordinary-looking folks, but as I looked at them closely I noticed that something wasn’t quite right. The man seemed confused, disoriented, distressed. The woman seemed stricken, sad. She ...

Shifting the balance of power
We’re all aware that there’s a general election on 8 June. A great deal depends on it, not least the future of public services, the NHS, the wage packets and livelihood of UNISON members, and life in the UK after Brexit. But there are many other elections before June, all of which will have some impact on people’s lives. On 4 May voters will have their say in local government elections in England and Wales and council elections in Scotland. As well as those, the people of six English “city-regions” will have the chance to vote for a new figure on the political landscape – the metro mayors. So af...
