10 Quarantine Activities That Don ’ t Involve Watching the News
Captain’s Log. Day eight of quarantine. Work has been busy; I’m grateful for the technology we have to collaborate and continue business during this time. I have walked around the block seven times today. I wonder how many days in a row I can eat frozen jalapeno poppers for lunch before it needs to be addressed. All four cats in my Feline Foreign Language school have refused to make any progress learning French. I refresh my Google search for coronavirus news for the 19th time today. Virginia K-12 schools closed for the remainder of the school year. Olympics postponed. Three week lockdown in South Africa. More charts ...

Fox News found to be a major driving force behind global warming denial | Dana Nuccitelli
American consumers of conservative media like Fox News distrust climate scientists and don't believe the planet is warmingA new study published in the journal Public Understanding of Science (PDF available here) surveyed a nationally representative sample of over 1,000 Americans in 2008 and 2011 about their media consumption and beliefs about climate change. The results suggest that conservative media consumption (specifically Fox News and Rush Limbaugh) decreases viewer trust in scientists, which in turn decreases belief that global warming is happening. In contrast, consumption of non-conservative media (specifically ABC...

Reza Aslan on Zealot, Fox News and Richard Dawkins
The US academic – whose latest book, Zealot, was a bestseller even before his extraordinary Fox News interview went viral – talks about religion, his celebrity status and death threatsWhen a video goes viral online, you might expect it to feature a kitten dancing on a hippo, or Russell Brand telling an awards ceremony about breasts. Not a theologian putting a Fox News interviewer bang to rights on why he, a Muslim, had dared to write a book about Jesus. Yet a clip of Reza Aslan doing just that went viral last month, pushing his book to the top of bestseller lists."Just to be clear, this is not some attack on Chris...

This Week in Mentalists – The “I’m so OCD” Edition
Hello! This is Bellsie from Obsessively Compulsively Yours here. This week is OCD Awareness Week – a chance to clear up some of the myths that still surround the illness. The term OCD is frequently misused in everyday language, and a recent street survey highlighted that 44% of people felt they had ‘OCD traits’, which clearly shows the lack of understanding that still exists about OCD, with people still confusing non-anxiety provoking traits for the illness. I know that I’m preaching to the congregation here but in honour of OCD Week, I thought that we’d start with a quick round up of some of the OCD blogs that w...

Increasing length of health news stories on local television may benefit public health
Previous research has shown that the most popular way Americans get their health news is by watching local television broadcasts. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri School of Journalism have found that while local television news is the most common source of health news for Americans, most health news stories on local news broadcasts are only 30 seconds or less in length...

Fake news and fake science
In a recent editorial, the New York Times wrote about ‘the breakdown of a shared public reality built upon widely accepted facts’. As a scientist, I am appalled by the disdain for facts shown by many in this country, including the President-Elect. Unfortunately, science is not without its share of fake information. The Times argues that at one time, nearly everyone had a unified source of news – the proverbial Walter Cronkite. Social media and the internet changed all that, allowing people to have their own sources of news, whether they be real or fake. The web developers in Macedonia who are paid $30,000 a ...
