OH HAI Sunday News Round-Up: New Year’s Resolutions Edition
Judgy cats will overseeing postingUnmentionable personal things of late have kept me from really wanting to blog more than I have been. I can’t really describe the details here, but suffice it to say, it’s one of those things that sort of takes up your whole brainspace and doesn’t leave much emotional energy leftover for doing anything else – one of those things that can cause you to spin down everything you *like* doing because you’re busy dealing with *the other thing.* Ugh. So, happy new year! One of my goals for the new year is to spin those likable things back up, and focus on arranging t...

Sunday News Round-Up – Dolly Parton Flips the Bird Edition
Tennessee state Senator Stacey Campfield brought back the “Don’t say gay” bill to forbid teachers from discussing sexualities other than heterosexuality. He was rightfully mocked on the Colbert Report for this and other bills he’s filed. The bill (SB 234) technically forbids discussion of anything “inconsistent with natural human reproduction” – because, you know, all sex results in reproduction and all straight people are capable of reproducing. Worst, though, is that it requires teachers and school counselors who talk to a student who might be questioning their sexuality to notif...

Sunday News Round-Up, Awesome Afghan Edition
I just read through the CDC’s first ever report on interpersonal and sexual violence by sexual orientation, and it’s depressing as hell. I should have more info up at Our Bodies Our Blog this week. Also at OBOS, I point to the Selling Sickness conference I would have liked to have attended, and we have a guest item on new coverage may spur younger women to use long acting contraceptives. More forced ultrasound for abortion, this time in Indiana, for medication abortion. A list of pro-choice films – I’ve seen If These Walls Could Talk and The Education of Shelby Knox, how about you? More in things w...

Sunday News Round-Up, Catastrophizing Edition
In Texas, Restoring Family-Planning Cuts Without Ruffling Feathers Using taxpayer dollars to finance family-planning services has become politically thorny in Texas, largely because of Republican lawmakers’ assertions that the women’s health clinics providing that care are affiliated with abortion providers. In the fiscal crunch of 2011, the Legislature cut the state’s family-planning budget by two-thirds, with some lawmakers claiming that they were defunding the “abortion industry.” Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, found that more than 50 family-planning clinics had closed statewide as a result....

Liverpool Bedroom Tax news release - Nowhere near enough Cllr Brant
Reblogged from SPeye: Last week I posted about a bedroom tax ‘dirty tricks’ campaign by Liverpool City Council.  This then got a response from Deputy Mayor Cllr Paul Brant which I also commented upon as being woeful.  This is all covered here. On Friday last week Liverpool City Council then issued another press statement through its PR unit at Dale Street News.  The text of this is at the end… Read more… 3,094 more words

Scriptonite Daily's Round up of the Week's News
Reblogged from Scriptonite Daily: Hi readers! News wise, what a nauseating week? From the egregious extremes of the racist van, the UK Border Agency spotchecks of people of colour along our transport networks, to the unchecked privilege of some celeb twitterati demanding #twittersilence from groups who have to fight every day to be heard. On a personal note, I've begun two new and exciting projects this week.  Read more… 231 more words, 1 more video

Sunday News Round-Up, Announcements Edition
A few things that have caught my eye recently: Rape Victims As Criminals: Illegal Abortion after Rape in Ecuador – I haven’t read this report yet, but wanted to pass it along for exploration of how restrictive anti-abortion laws make criminals out of rape victims. A reminder about the disproportionate violence experienced by transgender people. Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old black transgender woman, was beaten to death. Someone on Facebook this week mentioned they hope the vitriol directed at Chelsea Manning online was not representative of what people would say in person to a transgender individual; unfortunate...
