Framing a 'social problem': Emotion in anti-abortion activists' depiction of the abortion debate.
Abstract Social psychological research on activism typically focuses on individuals' social identifications. We complement such research through exploring how activists frame an issue as a social problem. Specifically, we explore anti-abortion activists' representation of abortion and the abortion debate's protagonists so as to recruit support for the anti-abortion cause. Using interview data obtained with UK-based anti-abortion activists (N = 15), we consider how activists characterized women having abortions, pro-abortion campaigners, and anti-abortion campaigners. In particular, we consider the varied ways in...

Abortion among Adolescents in Israel: Intervention and Health Behavior Outcomes.
Abstract The current study investigated the post-abortion health behaviors of adolescents. Authors assessed the association between pre-abortion interventions and receiving post-abortion checkups and uptake of effective contraceptives. Participants were 172 adolescents under 19 years of age who were recruited pre-abortion at 10 hospitals in Israel and followed up by phone one and two months post-abortion. Results indicate that a quarter of participants did not receive a post-abortion checkup. The reported reasons for this were mostly personal, with very few cases attributed to accessibility issues. Rates of effect...

LncRNA-TCL6 promotes early abortion and inhibits placenta implantation via the EGFR pathway.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with normal pregnancy, lncRNA-TCL6 was highly expressed in placental tissues of threatened abortion pregnancy. Moreover, the expression of lncRNA-TCL6 in placenta tissues of spontaneous abortion pregnancy was significantly higher than induced abortion pregnancy. Knockdown of lncRNA-TCL6 promoted the proliferation of trophoblast cells and inhibited the abortion via the EGFR signaling pathway. PMID: 30468451 [PubMed - in process]

There Are No Abortion Providers in Guam — the Governor Wants That to Change
(HONOLULU) — Lourdes Leon Guerrero vigorously defended abortion rights as she campaigned to become the first female governor of Guam. She won, but now no doctors are willing to perform the procedure she fought so hard to defend. The last abortion provider in the heavily Catholic U.S. territory retired in May 2018. That’s forcing women seeking to end their pregnancies to fly thousands of miles from the remote Pacific island — a costly and sometimes prohibitive step. “I truly believe that women should have control of their bodies,” Gov. Guerrero, a former nurse, told The Associated Press in a ph...

Judge Rules That Missouri ’s Last Abortion Clinic Must Remain Open for Now
A judge granted Planned Parenthood of St. Louis a preliminary injunction on Monday, allowing Missouri’s only abortion clinic to remain open for the time being. The ruling, hailed as a victory by abortion rights advocates, is not the final word on the dispute over Planned Parenthood’s license in the state. Circuit Judge Michael Stelzer ordered the state Department of Health and Senior Services to decide by June 21 whether to renew Planned Parenthood’s license. “This is a clear victory for people across Missouri — but the threat is far from over,” Dr. Leana Wen, president of Planned Paren...

Person-centred care for abortion services in private facilities to improve women's experiences in Kenya.
Abstract Globally, access to good quality abortion services and post-abortion care is a critical determinant for women's survival after unsafe abortion. Unsafe abortions account for high levels of maternal death in Kenya. We explored women's experiences and perceptions of their abortion and post-abortion care experiences in Kenya through person-centred care. This qualitative study included focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with women aged 18-35 who received safe abortion services at private clinics. Through thematic analyses of women's testimonies, we identified gaps in the abortion care and person-c...

Majority support for access to abortion care including later abortion in South Australia.
CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm the trend of increasing support for access to abortion and add two new insights. There was majority support for using existing general protections for the rights and obligations of those with a conscientious objection to abortion. Second, there was strong support for decisions about later abortion to be decided through normal clinical consultation. These results indicate general community approval of abortion being normalised as healthcare, with the safeguards and accountabilities that status entails. Implications for public health: These results invite repeal of special laws about aborti...

Federal Judge: Women Can Get Abortion Pill Without In-Person Doctor Visit During Pandemic
(SILVER SPRING, Md.) — A federal judge agreed Monday to suspend a rule that requires women during the COVID-19 pandemic to visit a hospital, clinic or medical office to obtain an abortion pill. U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang in Maryland concluded that the “in-person requirements” for patients seeking medication abortion care impose a “substantial obstacle” to abortion patients and are likely unconstitutional under the circumstances of the pandemic. “Particularly in light of the limited timeframe during which a medication abortion or any abortion must occur, such infringement on the ...
