A young mother carries her baby out of Ramón González Coro maternity hospital in Havana. Credit: Jorge Luis Baños/IPS By Ivet GonzálezHAVANA, Sep 6 2013 (IPS) In nearly all of Latin America, illegal abortion is a serious public health problem. But in Cuba, where abortion is legal, it is being overused by teenagers. Three times as many teenagers terminate their pregnancies than carry them to term. Many pregnant 15 to 19 year olds have already had one or more abortions according to their medical histories, researchers find. Having 76 percent of pregnant teenagers electing to abort “is a public health problem,”...

Medical students' attitudes and perceptions on abortion: a cross-sectional survey among medical interns in Maharastra, India
Conclusion: Disallowing attitudes toward abortion and misconceptions about the legal regulations were common among the surveyed medical students. Knowledge and attitudes toward abortion among future physicians could be improved by amendments to the medical education, potentially increasing the number of future providers delivering safe and legal abortion services.Implication Paragraph: Abortion is legal in India since decades, but maternal mortality due to unsafe abortions remains high. This survey of attitudes toward abortion among medical interns in Maharastra indicates that disallowing views prevail. Improved knowledge ...

Unsafe Abortions Continue to Plague Kenya
By Robert KibetNAIROBI, May 2 2015 (IPS)She is just 14, but Janida avoids eye contact with others, preferring to look down at the ground and nodding her head if someone tries to engage her in conversation.Janida (not her real name) was once a sociable and playful child, but that was before she was sexually abused by her stepfather and giving birth to a baby who is now four months old. Her days marked by trauma and depression, Janida is just one of many girl children in Kenya who have been abused and robbed of their childhood, leaving them emotionally scarred.“The little girl [Janida] underwent both physical and mental to...

Incidence of Emergency Department Visits and Complications After Abortion
ABSTRACT: Published rates for complications after abortion may be inaccurate for a number of reasons. They usually do not include complications diagnosed at a site other than the original care site such as an emergency department (ED). Only limited data are available for ED visits for complications, especially for women living in rural locations who must travel to distant locations for abortion care. Such women likely seek postabortion care at an ED near their home. Moreover, differences in procedures used for termination of pregnancy, weeks of gestation, and protocols used to detect complications influence reported rates....

Microcephaly Revives Battle for Legal Abortion in Brazil
“Abortion shouldn’t be a crime” reads a sign held in one of the numerous demonstrations held in Brazil to demand the legalisation of abortion. Credit: Courtesy of Distintas LatitudesBy Mario OsavaRIO DE JANEIRO, Feb 8 2016 (IPS)The Zika virus epidemic and a rise in the number of cases of microcephaly in newborns have revived the debate on legalising abortion in Brazil. However, the timing is difficult as conservative and religious groups are growing in strength, especially in parliament.“We are issuing a call to society to hold a rational, generous debate towards a review of the law that criminalises abortion,” l...

Abortion Does Not Lead to Long-Term Mental Health Problems, Study Suggests
Astudy that tracked the long-term mental health outcomes of women who obtained or were denied abortions has concluded that abortion does not increase a woman ’s risk of mental health problems five years later. In fact, as was reported this week inJAMA Psychiatry, women who had obtained an abortion demonstrated more positive outcomes initially compared with women who were denied an abortion.“There is a considerable amount of misinformation about negative mental health consequences as a result of abortion,” said former APA President Nada Stotland, M.D., who was not involved with the study. Stotland is an expert in repr...

'Removed from humanity': a qualitative analysis of attitudes toward abortion providers in anti-abortion individuals in Canada.
CONCLUSION: We document a new component of abortion provider stigma: the belief that abortion providers are harmed by abortion and that they are to be pitied for this. This 'abortion harms providers' attitude parallels recent anti-abortion arguments that abortion harms women. These stigmatising attitudes both construct the provider as untrustworthy and unable to properly care for women. PMID: 29517337 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Women Who Receive Abortion No More Likely to Have Suicidal Thoughts Than Those Denied Abortions
Astudy published Thursday inAJP in Advance found that having an abortion does not place women at higher risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts than being denied an abortion. In fact, the rates of suicidal ideation were low across groups, when compared with other studies of pregnant and postpartum women.“The study adds to the growing body of evidence that having an abortion does not lead to negative mental health outcomes,” study co-author M. Antonia Biggs, Ph.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, toldPsychiatric News. “Therefore, policies requiring that women be warned that they are at increased risk of...

Quality of Information Available Online for Abortion Self-Referral.
CONCLUSION: Two thirds of map results facilitated abortion self-referral, whereas only half of webpage results did so. Advertisements were the least likely to facilitate and the most likely to hinder self-referral. Quality was lowest in areas that were farthest from abortion providers. Health Systems & #039; Capacity to Provide Post-Abortion Care: A Multicountry Analysis Using Signal Functions
Summary Background Abortion-related mortality is one of the main causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Laws often restrict the provision of safe abortion care, yet post-abortion care is a service that all countries have committed to provide to manage abortion complications. There is minimal evidence on the capacity of national health systems to provide post-abortion care. Methods We did a multicountry analysis of data from nationally representative Service Provision Assessment surveys done between 2007 to 2017 in ten countries across three regions (Bangladesh, Haiti, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nepal, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanza...

Patients' Motivation for Surgical Versus Medical Abortion.
CONCLUSION: Being able to offer two highly effective options for induced abortion will hopefully improve equitable access to abortion. To increase women's acceptance of medical abortion as a feasible option, we need to consider making some changes to the follow-up plan in our clinic.
