The American Medical Association is no Longer Neutral on Abortion
The American Medical Association is suing North Dakota to block two abortion-related laws, the latest signal the doctors’ group is shifting to a more aggressive stance as the Donald Trump administration and state conservatives ratchet up efforts to eliminate legal abortion. The group, which represents all types of physicians in the U.S., has tended to stay on the sidelines of many controversial social issues, which, until recently, included abortion and contraception. Instead, it has focused on legislation affecting the practice and finances of large swaths of its membership. But, says AMA President Patrice Harris, t...

India ’s Liberal Abortion Law, Nullified by Social Stigma
Sex workers in Chennai give a thumps up to India's liberalised abortion law. Many sex workers are living with HIV and face discrimination and stigma in accessing safe abortions. Residents Already Need to Travel for Abortion Training. Experts Fear Roe ’s End Will Make It Even Harder
In 2021, Dr. Mallika Govindan, a family medicine resident at Mount Sinai Health System, got disappointing news. Even though she had pursued a career in medicine in order to become an abortion provider—and had chosen a residency in New York City, where she felt she would get the best training—she wouldn’t be able to learn how to provide abortion care locally. Because of pandemic precautions, Planned Parenthood New York City, which trains many medical residents, had to scale back its abortion training program. Govindan spent months researching other options and applying for scholarships. In February 2022, s...

Abortion in Canada —Legal for Decades But Hindered by Stigma
While abortion in Canada has been legal for decades, procuring one is difficult for many. Credit: Gayatri Malhotra/UnsplashBy Juliet MorrisonOttawa, Jul 19 2022 (IPS) Toronto resident Miranda Knight describes her abortion experience as relatively simple. After finding out she was pregnant on a Wednesday in 2017, she booked an appointment at an available clinic and got one for the following Monday. She had the procedure that day and left the clinic by noon. But Knight’s experience is not the reality for all. As Canada’s most populous city, Toronto has several access points to abortion. Despite abortion being legal natio...

Abortion Pills Are Coming to Pharmacies. But Access Will Still Be Limited in Restrictive States
Some abortion advocates celebrated after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Jan. 3 finalized a rule that allows certified retail pharmacies to dispense abortion medications. But the policy may not expand abortion access as much as supporters hope, some experts say. “There isn’t really a great change happening,” says Robin Marty, author of The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America and director of operations at a reproductive health center in Alabama that offered abortion care until it was banned in the state. “It’s just a good headline.” The FDA’s update doesn’t chan...

America ’s Second Year Post-Roe Will Be Even More Contentious
By the time the U.S. Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminated the federally protected right to abortion one year ago, public-health and legal experts were armed to the teeth with predictions about what the complicated fights over reproductive care would look like in all 50 states. Experts warned that key steps of the anti-abortion movement’s path to a total abortion ban could include attempts to establish fetal personhood laws, criminalize pregnant women facing complications and miscarriages, and access citizens’ private data to enforce restrictions. Since last June, 14 U.S. states have enacte...

40 Years of Health Care for Women-Including Access to Abortion Services
Today's political rhetoric in the U.S. makes it easy to fall into the trap of viewing abortion services as outside the realm of women's health care--but a recent event in Manhattan belied that logical flaw, just as Scientific American did in an editorial in its May 2012 issue. Abortion services, which can include counseling, pain management, abortion pills, and in-clinic abortions, are part of family planning, health care and a critical element of women's health care, in particular. At the event last week hosted by Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health to mark the 40 th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decisi...

Curbs on Abortion Spread Across East Europe
A “virus” of restrictive abortion legislation is spreading from Eastern Europe, health experts and rights campaigners have said, amid Church pressure and misguided government attempts to stop falling birth rates. Just weeks ago a new law was introduced in Macedonia tightening up relatively liberal abortion legislation which had been followed for more than 40 years. And last month, Lithuanian lawmakers gave initial approval to some of strictest abortion legislation in the world. Tighter abortion laws are also being considered in Russia and the Ukraine while the Georgian parliament is expected to debate abortion laws aft...
