Foracare TN ' G Voice Meter: Great Option for PWD ' s With Visual Impairments (others, too!)
I pretty much limit my diabetes blogging these days, except when I think there ' s something REALLY important or unique to share, although much of what I began with now has several nonprofits and organizations to advance the issues.  Most of my diabetes-related stuff these days can be found on my Twitter feed, which is updated pretty much daily.  Still, when I need more space to share information, this blog is still where I turn. As I last blogged a few weeks ago (see http://goo.gl/mi5nEm for my post), I was very sorry when my good friend Kitty Castellini passed away, not from diabetes or diabetes-related issue...

Want to Improve Patient Health? Stop Promoting Health!
This article quoted the late Noreen Clark, internationally renowned chronic disease management researcher, as saying that improving daily feeling and functioning is the real hook for motivating patients to manage their illnesses. To Motivate the Consistent Decisions that Favor Health, Let’s Rebrand Health as Well-Being I propose a simple strategy: Let’s rebrand “health” as “well-being.” In addition to the interdisciplinary science that supports this suggestion, I’ve been using this tactic in my private health coaching practice for twenty years and have seen how this simple change in framing revolutionizes peo...

Everything You Wanted to Know About Vaccine Marketing, PR, Earned Media, Lobbying, and " Anti-Vaxxers "
Anti-HPV vaccines (e.g., Merck & #39;s Gardisil) are back in the news these days. Last night, NBC Nightly News reported & quot;Study Shows Alarming Rise in HPV-Related Cancers. & quot; The takeaways are (1) HPV infection causes cancers, (2) those cancers can be prevented with new vaccines, but (3) not enough kids are getting vaccinated. A woman with cervical cancer attributed to HPV says at the end of the piece & quot;I don & #39;t know how you can not prevent your child from getting cancer if there is a way to do it. & quot; This comes on the heels of a new Merck campaign that blames parents for not getting their child...

Habits and Practices in Your 20s
Your 20s are a powerful decade of your life. During this time you sculpt many of the habits and practices you’ll probably maintain throughout your 30s, 40s, and beyond. However, many 20-somethings don’t give much thought to how their decisions and actions during this decade will ultimately create their future identity. They expect they’ll be able to make changes later, but that assumption usually turns out to be wrong. Career During your 20s you may think of your career path as having many options. You believe you could do many different types of work. That’s technically true. Later in life, however...

Can hair really be sensitive to protein? Episode 139
Is the NIOD brand really “ultra-scientific?” Saania says…I have a question about a skincare brand that’s gained a cult status amongst serious skin care junkies. The brand NIOD, under the umbrella brand Deciem, claims to be “skincare for the hyper-educated”.  Their star product is called Copper Amino Isolate Serum. I wanted to know what you thought about the science behind this serum, as well as some of their other super sciency sounding products and claims. I was not familiar with this company so I had to do a little research on Deciem. The first thing I found was the company tagline which is…...

Out of Africa
I just got back from the trip of a lifetime: an African safari. I had the good fortune to visit South Africa (both Cape Town/Cape of Good Hope and Krueger National Park) as well as the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls. Wow. If you have done it, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, it’s so worth it. No tigers or bears, but lions galore. And elephants and rhinos and hippos (my favorite) and monkeys and I could go on and on. Even ostriches and penguins! It’s something to behold. Of course it’s hard to go the entire trip without making Lion King references or Book of Mormon jokes. Penguins from near Cape of Good Hope T...

Four Ways To Address The Ethical Tensions Around Expedited Approval Of New Prescription Drugs
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a new drug’s manufacturer to present affirmative evidence of its efficacy and safety before it can be marketed. Because testing new drugs requires a delay between identification of an important, novel prescription drug and FDA approval, some patients with serious or life-threatening illnesses and no satisfactory options will not live to see a potentially life-saving medication approved for public use. To address this concern, the FDA and Congress have established several programs—with the support of pharmaceutical manufacturers and some patient advocacy groups—t...
