Effect of eyelid muscle action and rubbing on telemetrically obtained intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma with an IOP sensor implant
Conclusion Eyelid manoeuvres in patients with POAG elicited brief increases in IOP that were particularly large with squeezing and rubbing. Further investigation of the potential implications for glaucoma progression is warranted.

Neurofilament light chain: a new marker for neuronal decay in the anterior chamber fluid of patients with glaucoma
Conclusion NfL levels in anterior chamber fluid are elevated in patients with glaucoma and correlate with intraocular pressure and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness. The presented data strongly support anterior chamber fluid NfL as a new marker for glaucoma.

Parapapillary choroidal microvascular density in acute primary angle-closure and primary open-angle glaucoma: an optical coherence tomography angiography study
Conclusions While superficial peripapillary vessels were affected to similar degrees in POAG and APAC, PPCMv drop-out was greater with POAG versus APAC, suggesting that choroidal vessel density may be affected to a lesser extent following an acute increase in intraocular pressure before glaucoma develops.

Cost-effectiveness of primary surgical versus primary medical management in the treatment of patients presenting with advanced glaucoma
Conclusion This is the first study to evaluate management strategies for those presenting with advanced glaucoma. At a 2-year time horizon, medication is the more cost-effective approach for managing glaucoma. Future research can focus on the costs and benefits of the treatments over a longer time horizon.

Glaucoma in rural China (the Rural Epidemiology for Glaucoma in China (REG-China)): a national cross-sectional study
Conclusions Rural populations have a high prevalence of glaucoma, which should be included in chronic disease management programmes in China for long-term care.

Hand grip strength and ocular associations: the Ural Eye and Medical Study
Conclusions and relevance In addition to parameters such as lower physical activity, higher depression score and worse general health status, a reduced HGS is associated with visual impairment, shorter axial length, lower intraocular pressure, thinner peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and higher prevalence of diabetic retinopathy. HGS dynamometry or a handshake may provide the ophthalmologist additional clinical information about the general health and ocular parameters of the patient.

Impact of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-Related Factors on Glaucoma: a Comprehensive Review
AbstractPurposeTo investigate the contradictory association of glaucoma with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its related factors that have been a springboard for a number of complications including glaucoma. Also, to examine the neuroprotective effects of antidiabetic medications.Recent FindingsRecent studies suggest that T2DM may alleviate glaucoma risk or they may have common risk factors. Further, antidiabetic medications also exhibited neuroprotective properties in several studies.SummaryGlaucoma is one of the complications significantly influenced by diabetes-induced metabolic changes in the body. Though the preci...

Current understanding of genetics and epigenetics in pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma
Mol Aspects Med. 2023 Sep 18;94:101214. doi: 10.1016/j.mam.2023.101214. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPseudoexfoliation is a complex, progressive, and systemic age-related disorder. The early stage of deposition of extracellular fibrillar material on ocular and extraocular tissues is termed as pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS). The severe advanced stage is known as pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG), which involves increased intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage. Through genome-wide association and candidate gene studies, PEX has been associated with numerous genetic risk variants in various gene loci. However, the ge...

Systemic immuno-inflammatory index in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma
CONCLUSIONS: In PEXS patients, both SII and NLR were significantly higher, albeit in a small group of patients, and SII may be a helpful and supportive parameter for NLR in risk estimation in these patients. There was a statistically significant difference only in NLR in patients with PEXG when compared with the control group. However, these results need to be supported by future longitudinal and larger studies to identify any possible link between hematological inflammatory markers and pseudoexfoliation.PMID:37720205 | PMC:PMC10504835 | DOI:10.1177/25158414231197072

Development of mucoadhesive Timolol loaded chitosan-nanocomposite to treat glaucoma
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 14:126917. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126917. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTimolol Maleate is an aqueous soluble β-blocker antiglaucoma drug used to suppress intraocular pressure. Several commercially available ocular formulations are not effective in delivering to the target site due to their water-soluble property and low mucoadhesiveness. Hence, there is a requirement for a highly mucoadhesive drug-loaded nanocomposite to suppress intraocular pressure with enhanced bioavailability. Herein, we have prepared a mucoadhesive Timolol-loaded graphene quantum dot-chitosan-nanocomposite to trea...
