Deep Learning Estimation of 10-2 Visual Field Map Based on Macular Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Measurements
Glaucoma is a progressive disease associated with characteristic structural changes to the eye and loss of visual function.1 Early diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression are crucial to prevent significant loss of vision and blindness.1,2

Machine learning –couched treatment algorithms tailored to individualized profile of patients with primary anterior chamber angle closure predisposed to the glaucomatous optic neuropathy
AbstractBackgroundPrimary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is still one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness, with a trend towards an increase in the number of patients to 32.04 million by 2040, an increase of 58.4% compared with 2013. Health risk assessment based on multi-level diagnostics and machine learning –couched treatment algorithms tailored to individualized profile of patients with primary anterior chamber angle closure are considered essential tools to reverse the trend and protect vulnerable subpopulations against health-to-disease progression.AimTo develop a methodology for personalized choice of an ...

Prediction of visual field progression in glaucoma: existing methods and artificial intelligence
AbstractTimely treatment is essential in the management of glaucoma. However, subjective assessment of visual field (VF) progression is not recommended, because it can be unreliable.  There are two types of artificial intelligence (AI) strong and weak (machine learning). Weak AIs can perform specific tasks. Linear regression is a method of weak AI. Using linear regression in the real-world clinic has enabled analyzing and predicting VF progression. However, caution is still req uired when interpreting the results, because whenever the number of VF data sets investigated is small, the predictions can be inaccurate. Several...

At a glance
Ocular morbidity in Marfan syndrome: a nationwide epidemiological study (see page 1051) This nationwide epidemiological study of ocular morbidity in Marfan syndrome demonstrates a profound burden, compared to controls, especially concerning disorders of lens, retinal detachment, and glaucoma, which translates into significantly increased ophthalmic surgery and medication. Real-world visual outcomes of cataract surgery based on population-based studies: a systematic review (see page 1056) There is a lack of population-based data on post-cataract surgery visual acuity outcomes in many countries. Existing evidence demonstrate...

Association between contrast sensitivity function and structural damage in primary open-angle glaucoma
CONCLUSIONS: Full spatial frequency contrast sensitivity impairment, most notably at low spatial frequencies, is a characteristic change in POAG. Contrast sensitivity is a potential functional endpoint for the measurement of glaucoma severity.PMID:37423645 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323539

A generalizable deep learning regression model for automated glaucoma screening from fundus images
In this study, we confirm that a previously described regression network for glaucoma referral (G-RISK) obtains excellent results in a variety of challenging settings. Thirteen different data sources of labeled fundus images were utilized. The data sources include two large population cohorts (Australian Blue Mountains Eye Study, BMES and German Gutenberg Health Study, GHS) and 11 publicly available datasets (AIROGS, ORIGA, REFUGE1, LAG, ODIR, REFUGE2, GAMMA, RIM-ONEr3, RIM-ONE DL, ACRIMA, PAPILA). To minimize data shifts in input data, a standardized image processing strategy was developed to obtain 30° disc-centered ima...

An overview and update of CO < sub > 2 < /sub > laser ‑assisted sclerectomy surgery in primary open angle glaucoma (Review)
Exp Ther Med. 2023 Apr 20;25(6):270. doi: 10.3892/etm.2023.11969. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTGlaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The proportion of cases of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in China is gradually increasing. Glaucoma surgery has become more effective, safer, minimally invasive and personalized over the years. CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) is a minimally invasive glaucoma treatment. CLASS has recently been used to gradually lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with POAG, pseudocapsular detachment syndrome and secondary glaucoma. In this operation, precise ...

Automatic Method for Optic Disc Segmentation Using Deep Learning on Retinal Fundus Images
CONCLUSIONS: The optic disc area produced by the proposed method was similar to that identified by an ophthalmologist. Therefore, this method can be considered for implementing automatic segmentation of the optic disc area.PMID:37190738 | DOI:10.4258/hir.2023.29.2.145
