Unilateral acute iris transillumination syndrome with glaucoma and iris pigment epithelium dispersion simulating iris melanoma
CONCLUSION AND IMPORTANCE: Unilateral acute iris transillumination syndrome with diffuse iris pigment epithelial loss can simulate iris melanoma. Prompt herpes viral studies may be informative.PMID:37680309 | PMC:PMC10481171 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajoc.2023.101912

Genome editing in the treatment of ocular diseases
Experimental & Molecular Medicine, Published online: 01 August 2023; doi:10.1038/s12276-023-01057-2Using gene editing tools to correct gene mutations and manipulate specific tissues in the eye could revolutionize treatment for multiple eye diseases. Krzysztof Palczewski and co-workers at the University of California in Irvine, USA, reviewed the current status of gene editing tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 for eye diseases. The eye’s special ‘immune privilege’ status means it can tolerate therapeutic interventions without excessive inflammatory responses. The eye is also easy to image for monitoring. Recent successful ...

Rare case report: a 26-year-old man with Eales' disease
Conclusion: Despite the aggressive treatment with oral steroids, immunosuppressants, and anti-VEGF injections, there were many exacerbations, and remission was not achieved. As a result, aggressive neovascular glaucoma developed, which led to total blindness in the left eye and legal blindness in the right eye. Abbreviations: HLA = human leukocyte antigens, Anti-VEGF = vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors, BCVA = best corrected visual acuity, FA = fundus angiography, HBsAg = hepatitis B surface antigen, Anti-HCV = hepatitis C antibodies, TPHA = Treponema Pallidum hemagglutination assay, PCR = polymerase chain reac...

Juvenile Dermatomyositis and Infantile Cerebral Palsy: Aicardi-Gouteres Syndrome, Type 5, with a Novel Mutation in SAMHD1-A Case Report
CONCLUSIONS: Early diagnosis of AGS is highly important as it allows starting treatment in a timely manner. Timely treatment, in return, can help avoid the development/progression of end-organ damage, including severe neurological complications and early death. It is necessary to spread information about AGS among neurologists, neonatologists, infectious disease specialists, and pediatricians. A multidisciplinary team approach is required.PMID:37371788 | DOI:10.3390/biomedicines11061693

COVID-19 Vaccine-Associated Ocular Adverse Effects: An Overview
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence regarding the ocular adverse effects does not outweigh the benefits of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with pre-existing systemic or ophthalmic diseases. This review provides insights into the possible temporal association between reported ocular adverse events and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines; however, further investigations are required to identify the link between potential causality and pathological mechanisms.PMID:36366386 | DOI:10.3390/vaccines10111879

High rate of conversion from ocular hypertension to glaucoma in subjects with uveitis
Conclusion Rapid progression was observed from ocular hypertension to uveitic glaucoma. Uveitic glaucoma is aggressive, with high likelihood of requiring surgical management and high risk of central vision loss. Close collaboration between uveitis and glaucoma specialists is required to maximise outcomes for these patients.

Impact of the use of anti-glaucoma medications on the risk of herpetic keratitis recurrence
CONCLUSION: There is no association between the use of topical ocular hypotensive therapies and HSV/HZV keratitis recurrence. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.PMID:36224301 | DOI:10.1007/s10792-022-02552-7

How study of naturally occurring ocular disease in animals improves ocular health globally
J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2022 Oct 4:1-7. doi: 10.2460/javma.22.08.0383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this article, which is part of the Currents in One Health series, the role of naturally occurring ocular disease in animals is reviewed with emphasis on how the understanding of these ocular diseases contributes to one health initiatives, particularly the pathogenesis and treatment of ocular diseases common to animals and humans. Animals spontaneously develop ocular diseases that closely mimic those in humans, especially dry eye disease, herpes virus infection (cats), fungal keratitis (horses), bacterial keratoconjunctivitis...
