Impact of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-Related Factors on Glaucoma: a Comprehensive Review
AbstractPurposeTo investigate the contradictory association of glaucoma with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its related factors that have been a springboard for a number of complications including glaucoma. Also, to examine the neuroprotective effects of antidiabetic medications.Recent FindingsRecent studies suggest that T2DM may alleviate glaucoma risk or they may have common risk factors. Further, antidiabetic medications also exhibited neuroprotective properties in several studies.SummaryGlaucoma is one of the complications significantly influenced by diabetes-induced metabolic changes in the body. Though the preci...

The potential for mitochondrial therapeutics in the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma: a review
Glaucoma, an age-related neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and the corresponding loss of visual fields. This disease is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, making early diagnosis and effective treatment paramount. The pathophysiology of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common form of the disease, remains poorly understood. Current available treatments, which target elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), are not effective at slowing disease progression in approximately 30% of patients. There is a great need to identify and study treatment o...

Front Cover: Fish Oil in Glaucoma Treatment: From Biological Functions to Clinical Potential
Mol. Nutr. Food Res. 2023,67,202200727DOI:10.1002/mnfr.202200727The figure is divided into background, fish, and eyeball. The background is the underwater world with coral, seaweed, and other creatures undersea. The school of fish makes twists and turns into fish oil in imagination. Fish in yellow symbolize fish oil and take effect on glaucoma treatment in blood, intraocular pressure, retina, and neuron. This is reported by Xin Wei and co-workers in article number2200727.

Evaluation of the effects of environmental factors and eating habits on exfoliation syndrome and glaucoma in a Turkish population
CONCLUSION: This case-control study showed that time spent outdoors, wearing sunglasses, home type, heating method, and eating habits might be associated with XFS and XFG.PMID:37226472 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231178055

Prevalence and risk factors of retinal vein occlusion in the United States: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005 to 2008
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2023 Feb 14;36(3):335-340. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2023.2173938. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTRetinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a rare, vision-threatening vascular disorder. Due to limited recovery associated with RVO, prevention is essential. There is a significant discrepancy in previously reported epidemiological studies in the United States on the prevalence and risk factors of RVO. The purpose of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of RVO in adults ≥40 years of age in the US using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2...

MIND diet lowers risk of open-angle glaucoma: the Rotterdam Study
ConclusionAdherence to the MIND diet was significantly associated with a lower incidence of OAG in contrast to adherence to the Mediterranean diet or the Dutch dietary guidelines. As this association was IOP-independent, the MIND diet may be particularly relevant for the prevention of neurodegeneration in the eye.

The Role of NAD < sup > + < /sup > and Nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) in Glaucoma: A Literature Review
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2022;68(3):151-154. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.68.151.ABSTRACTGlaucoma is a collection of irreversible optic neuropathies which, if left untreated, lead to severe visual field loss. These diseases are a leading cause of blindness across the globe and are estimated to affect approximately 80 million people, particularly women and people of Asian descent (Quigley HA, Broman AT. 2006. Br J Ophthalmol 90: 262-267). This represents a major burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the potential of nicotinamide (vitamin B3) as a novel option in the management of ...
