Machine learning –couched treatment algorithms tailored to individualized profile of patients with primary anterior chamber angle closure predisposed to the glaucomatous optic neuropathy
AbstractBackgroundPrimary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is still one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness, with a trend towards an increase in the number of patients to 32.04 million by 2040, an increase of 58.4% compared with 2013. Health risk assessment based on multi-level diagnostics and machine learning –couched treatment algorithms tailored to individualized profile of patients with primary anterior chamber angle closure are considered essential tools to reverse the trend and protect vulnerable subpopulations against health-to-disease progression.AimTo develop a methodology for personalized choice of an ...

The correlation between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and gut microbiota: a pilot study towards predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine
ConclusionThis bioinformatic study elucidates NFKB1, IL18, KITLG, TLR9, FKBP2, and HDAC4 as hub genes for POAG and GM regulation. Immune response modulated by macrophages plays an important role in POAG and may be potential targets for future predictive, preventive, and personalized diagnosis and treatment.

Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Disparities Drive Appointment No-Show in Patients with Chronic Eye Disease
ConclusionsOur results highlight the influence of ethnic, racial, medical, and socioeconomic characteristics on appointment NS among patients with chronic eye disease. Future interventions aimed at reducing appointment NS could channel resources to the at-risk populations identified in this analysis to improve access to care for those who need it most.

Unfulfilled Needs in the Detection, Diagnosis, Monitoring, Treatment, and Understanding of Glaucoma in Blacks Globally
AbstractGlaucoma is an ophthalmic disorder that affects a significant number of Blacks globally. A leading cause of this condition is an age-related enlargement of the lens and increased intraocular pressure. Although Blacks are affected by glaucoma at a higher rate than their Caucasian counterparts, there remains a lack of emphasis placed on the detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of glaucoma in this population. Education regarding glaucoma in the African and African American populations is essential to reducing rates of glaucoma-related visual impairment and improving treatment success. In this article, we hi...

Hazard detection during simulated driving in glaucoma patients - Daga FB, Boer ER, Diniz-Filho A, Elhosseiny A, Jammal AA, Tavares IM, Medeiros FA.
PRCIS: In this cross-sectional study, glaucoma patients showed slower reaction times (RT) to hazardous situations when compared to control subjects during simulated driving. Worse RTs were associated with greater magnitude of visual field loss. PUR...

Vascular dysregulation in glaucoma: retinal vasoconstriction and normal neurovascular coupling in altitudinal visual field defects
ConclusionsBecause dilation/constriction is normal, VD in POAG can be explained by chronic vasoconstriction which limits energy supply to retinal (and brain) neurons with subsequent hypo-metabolism ( “silent” neurons) or neuronal cell death. We propose that the root cause of POAG is primarily of vascular and not neuronal origin. This understanding can help to better personalize POAG therapy of not only targeting eye pressure but also vasoconstriction to prevent low vision, slowing its progre ssion and supporting recovery and restoration.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, # NCT04037384 on July 3, 2019.
