Comparison of EHR data-completeness in patients with different types of medical insurance coverage in the United States
In this study, we compared EHR continuity in populations covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial insurance. Using claims linked EHRs from a multi-center network in Massachusetts, including Medicare (MA EHR-Medicare cohort) and Medicaid (MA EHR-Medicaid cohort) claims data; and TriNetX (TriNetX cohort) claims linked EHR data from 11 US based healthcare organizations, we assessed (1) EHR-continuity quantified by proportion of encounters captured by EHR (capture proportion, CP); (2) area under receiver operating curve (AUROC) of previously validated model to identify patients with high EHR-continuity (CP>0.6); (3) mis...

Examining Patient Outcomes at a Faculty-Led Clinic for Uninsured and Underserved Clients
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Faculty-led clinics can improve the occupational performance of clients in need of occupational therapy services, particularly in the areas of self-care and mobility, which have previously been identified as top priorities for clients. What This Article Adds: This study addressed health disparities in unique and effective ways. By using objective measures of functional mobility and self-care, the study provides robust evidence of the faculty-led clinic's impact in providing underserved and uninsured communities with effective client-centered occupational therapy services.PMID:37595280 | DOI:10.5014/ajot.2023.050024

THCB 20th Birthday classics: A Brief History of Price Controls by Annoyed Republican Administrations
By UWE REINHARDT One of the greatest pleasures of running THCB has been to get to know and host the writings of some of my health policy heroes. This week I have already published work from Jeff Goldsmith, and Ian Morrison & Michael Millenson among others will be featured next week (as the party won’t quite stop). Perhaps one of the most amazing things was that the doyen of health economists, Uwe Reinhardt, offered to write some original pieces for THCB…prodded by former editor John Irvine. This is one of my favorites, riffing on a talk I heard him give in (I think) 1993 about how HCFA was like the Kreml...

Underserved head-and-neck and lung cancer patient characteristics are associated with caregiver participation in a clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Patient characteristics highlight caregiver relationships, informing trial design and recruitment for medically underserved cancer populations. Psychosocial interventions targeting underserved patients and their informal caregivers, those most in need of intervention support, should consider the inclusion of non-spousal cancer caregivers. Understanding how patient factors may be associated with caregiver involvement informs recruitment strategies and increases the utility of psychosocial interventions.PMID:37588772 | PMC:PMC10425903 | DOI:10.1016/j.conctc.2023.101195

Optimal site of care for administration of extended half-life respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) antibodies to infants in the United States (US)
CONCLUSION: FOV within 5 days after birth hospitalization discharge for Medicaid infants is substantially lower than that of commercially insured infants. Approximately 1 in 4 Medicaid infants and 1 in 8 infants with commercial insurance did not have an outpatient visit within 5 days of birth hospitalization discharge. For US infants born during the RSV season, administration of extended half-life RSV antibodies in the newborn nursery prior to discharge would ensure optimal uptake and minimize access disparities.PMID:37586957 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.089

National Trends in Microtia Repair Cost and Hospital Length of Stay
This study seeks to understand the hospital-level (institution type, size, and geographic region) and patient-level factors (race, age, and insurance status) that impact cost and LOS in patients who undergo microtia reconstructive surgery. A retrospective data analysis was conducted utilizing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database for the years 2008 to 2015. Inclusion criteria included patients who had an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnostic code for microtia (744.23) as well as a procedure for microtia correction (186×/187×). A total of 714 microtia repair cases met the inclu...
