National Trends in Microtia Repair Cost and Hospital Length of Stay
This study seeks to understand the hospital-level (institution type, size, and geographic region) and patient-level factors (race, age, and insurance status) that impact cost and LOS in patients who undergo microtia reconstructive surgery. A retrospective data analysis was conducted utilizing the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database for the years 2008 to 2015. Inclusion criteria included patients who had an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnostic code for microtia (744.23) as well as a procedure for microtia correction (186×/187×). Assessing Medicaid Coverage for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation and Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cell Therapy: A Project from the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy and the National Marrow Donor Program ACCESS Initiative
The American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) formed the ACCESS Initiative to address and reduce barriers to hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and cellular therapy (CT) to ensure equal access and outcomes for all patients in need. The 3 committees, addressing awareness, poverty, and racial and ethnic inequity, defined pilot projects focusing on addressing relevant barriers to HCT/CT. Because many socioeconomically disadvantaged HCT/CT recipients receive care through state Medicaid programs, the Poverty Committee conducted a Medicaid scan of all 50 ...

Patient-reported outcomes and pharmacist actions in patients with multiple sclerosis managed by health-system specialty pharmacies
CONCLUSION: Patients on DMTs through an HSSP reported low rates of impacted productivity, relapse, and hospitalization due to MS, although patients with noncommercial insurance were more likely to have impacted productivity. Patients reporting impacted productivity and those taking certain DMTs may require more frequent pharmacist actions.PMID:37556317 | DOI:10.1093/ajhp/zxad180

Predictors of Prolonged Length of Stay After Pituitary Adenoma Resection: A Large Cohort Analysis Using the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2019)
CONCLUSIONS: Black and Hispanic patients, patients with Medicaid insurance, and patients of low socioeconomic status patients are at significantly higher risk of emergent PA resection and PLOS. Efforts to prevent emergent surgeries and shorten hospitalization after pituitary surgery may need to primarily focus on patient groups with select sociodemographic characteristics.PMID:37550993 | DOI:10.1177/19458924231193527

Financial toxicity risk among patients with gastric banding complications in the United States: analysis of the National Inpatient Sample
CONCLUSIONS: About 1 in 2 uninsured patients admitted for AGB-related complications were at risk of financial toxicity. In addition to surgical risks, providers should consider the potential financial consequences of AGB when counselling patients on their choice of surgery.PMID:37550162 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.07.002
