Comparative effectiveness of mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccines in immunocompromised individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis using the GRADE framework
ConclusionThis GRADE meta-analysis based on a large number of consistent observational studies showed that the mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine is associated with improved clinical effectiveness in IC populations compared with BNT162b2.

Vitamin A biomarkers were associated with AGP and CRP over the course of a human norovirus challenge infection
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 11:1-19. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002076. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRetinol binding protein (RBP) is used as a proxy for retinol in population-based assessments of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) for cost-effectiveness and feasibility. When the cutoff of <0.7 mol/L for retinol is applied to RBP to define VAD, an equivalence of the two biomarkers is assumed. Evidence suggests that the relationship between retinol and RBP is not 1:1, particularly in populations with a high burden of infection or inflammation. The goal of this analysis was to longitudinally evaluate the retinol:RBP ratio over one month of...

The role of Mayors in protecting citizens' health: a brief report from Italy
In conclusion, mayors represent the institutional figures closest to the citizens. Municipalities and regional governments should coordinate and integrate their strategies and policies to meet health and social needs of citizens, providing easy access to shared pathways. Municipalities also regulate autonomously fundamental aspects related to the urban environment and can promote and protect health and improve the quality of life for citizens.PMID:37695182 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14481

Improving mycetoma case detection through the training of community health workers in Northern Uganda: protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial
Ther Adv Infect Dis. 2023 Sep 8;10:20499361231198332. doi: 10.1177/20499361231198332. eCollection 2023 Jan-Dec.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization acknowledges the need for countries to incorporate neglected tropical disease care into their routine health care system. However, low detection rates and late presentation of mycetoma to health facilities have been observed in endemic countries, including Uganda.OBJECTIVE: To empower community health workers (CHWs) in Northern Uganda to recognize and refer suspects of mycetoma to health facilities.DESIGN: This will be a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trial bas...

The Cognitive Framework Behind Modern Neuropathology
CONCLUSIONS.—: Methylation-based classification will be unable to solve all diagnostic problems in neuropathology. Information theory quantifications generate focused workflows in pathology, resulting in prevention of ordering unnecessary tests and identifying biomarkers that facilitate diagnosis.PMID:37694567 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2023-0209-RA

A Contemporary Approach to Intraoperative Evaluation in Neuropathology
CONCLUSIONS.—: A significant majority of neuropathologic diagnoses require ancillary testing, including molecular analysis, for appropriate classification. Therefore, the primary goal for any neurosurgical intraoperative diagnosis is the identification of diagnostic tissue and the preservation of the appropriate tissue for molecular testing. The intraoperative pathologist should seek to place a tumor in the most accurate diagnostic category possible, but specific diagnosis at the time of an intraoperative diagnosis is often not possible. Many entities have seen adjustments to grading criteria, including the incorporation...

Advancing the World Health Assembly's landmark Resolution on Strengthening Rehabilitation in Health Systems: unlocking the Future of Rehabilitation
Eur J Phys Rehabil Med. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.23736/S1973-9087.23.08160-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn May 2023, the historic Resolution on Strengthening Rehabilitation in Health Systems was adopted unanimously by the 194 Member States of the World Health Assembly (WHA), the highest health policy-setting body. The resolution aims to scale up and integrate rehabilitation into health systems as part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to address the growing rehabilitation needs due to the global ageing population, the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, and the emergence of new infectious diseases such as ...
