Observations in the Field Concerning Infection Control Practices in Dialysis
This article describes observations and findings related to infection prevention and control in dialysis facilities. Ensuring infection control best practices is critical for patient safety. Survey findings related to hand hygiene, disinfection practices, medication preparation and administration, central venous catheter management, and hepatitis B surveillance are reviewed. Implications for nephrology nursing in each scenario are discussed, including survey guidance for COVID-19 post-pandemic.PMID:37695516

Nephroscope-assisted single trocar peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion improves catheter survival compared with laparoscopic technique: Ten-year experience of a single center
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the traditional laparoscopic approach, the nephroscopic technique effectively prolonged catheter survival and reduces health care cost by reducing infectious complications. Electrolyte imbalance causes suppression of NK and T cell effector function in malignant ascites
CONCLUSION: Our data suggest a novel electrolyte-based mechanism of immunosuppression in malignant ascites of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. We show for the first time that the immunosuppression of NK cytotoxicity in coculture assays is correlated to patient poor survival. Therapeutic application of sodium channel inhibitors may provide new means for restoring immune cell activity in ascites or similar electrolyte imbalanced environments.PMID:37684704 | DOI:10.1186/s13046-023-02798-8
