Characteristics and management of hydrocephalus in adult patients with cerebellar glioblastoma: lessons from a French nationwide series of 118 cases
The objectives were to describe the occurence of hydrocephalus in a French nationwide series of adult patients with cGB, to identify the characteristics associated with hydrocephalus and to analyze the outcomes associated with the different surgical strategies, in order to propose practical guidelines. Consecutive cases of adult cGB patients prospectively recorded into the French Brain Tumor Database between 2003 and 2017 were screened. Diagnosis was confirmed by a centralized neuropathological review. Among 118 patients with cGB (mean age 55.9 years), 49 patients (41.5%) presented with pre-operative hydrocephalus. Thirtee...

Restoration of the corticoreticular pathway following shunt operation for hydrocephalus in a stroke patient
We report on a stroke patient who showed restoration of discontinued corticoreticular pathways (CRPs) on serial diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) concurrent with recovery of gait disturbance following shunt operation for hydrocephalus.Patient concerns:A 67-year-old female patient underwent stereotactic drainage for management of intraventricular hemorrhage due to a rupture of the left posterior communicating artery.Diagnoses:After 4 weeks from onset, the patient exhibited quadriparesis with more severe weakness in the proximal muscles and could not even stand or walk. She underwent comprehensive rehabilitation for 3 week...

Hydrocephalus in Guillain barre syndrome: A case report and review of the literature
We describe a 23-year old woman with a history of bilateral limbs pain followed by dysarthria, dysphagia, severe quadriplegia 0/5, areflexia, loss of consciousness and dysautonomia. Neuroimaging studies revealed enlarged lateral ventricles; while Electromyography demonstrated demyelination and nerve injury. Lumbar puncture results showed elevated protein level 2.6 g/L; normal glucose and cell count. Diagnosis: GBS with hydrocephalus. Interventions: The patient was started on intravenous immunoglobulin for 5 consecutive days followed by endotracheal intubation and supportive therapy including osmotherapy and CSF dra...

Impact of ventricular-peritoneal shunt valve design on clinical outcome of pediatric patients with hydrocephalus: Lessons learned from randomized controlled trials.
Authors: Hoshide R, Meltzer H, Dalle-Ore C, Gonda D, Guillaume D, Chen CC Abstract Hydrocephalus is one of the most common diseases managed by pediatric neurosurgeons. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting has been the mainstay of durable treatment for hydrocephalus for many decades. There are two main categories of shunt designs for regulating the extent of CSF diversion: (1) Fixed-parameter valves and (2) adjustable valves. Furthermore, these valves can also function with and without an anti-siphon device. Here, we review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the impact of these valve designs on the clin...

Delayed transient obstructive hydrocephalus after cerebral aneurysm rupture: A case report
Rationale: Obstructive hydrocephalus (OH) frequently occurs in patients with a ruptured cerebral aneurysm (CA), and it may lead to severe neurological deficits, including life-threatening brain herniation. OH generally occurs in the early stage of CA rupture, rather than in the late stage, and rarely resolves without therapy. Patient concerns: A 64-year-old woman with a ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm was treated with coil embolization. Nineteen days after her CA rupture, because of the delayed transient OH, she experienced a dramatic cycle in consciousness over 9 hours: wakefulness–drowsines...

Intracranial endodermal cyst presenting with nonobstructive hydrocephalus: A case report
We report the case of an elderly woman with intracranial endodermal cyst who presented with nonobstructive hydrocephalus. Patient concerns: A 78-year-old woman presented with acute deterioration of consciousness caused by acute hydrocephalus. She subsequently underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. Eighteen months after this operation, she developed numbness of extremities and gait and progressive cognitive disturbances. Diagnosis: Initially, the endodermal cyst could not be recognized, but it became clinically evident in the craniocervical junction after ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement. MRI revealed mul...

Obstructive hydrocephalus associated with spontaneous dural arteriovenous fistula: A case report
We present a 55-year-old female with 2 years history of headaches and blurring of vision. Cranial nerves examinations were unremarkable. Diagnoses: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and digital subtraction angiography showed multiple tortuous vascular malformation in the 3rd ventricle and quadrigeminal cistern resulting in obstructive hydrocephalus (OHC). Interventions: We utilized endovascular embolization treatment option to obliterate the lesion. We used Onyx embolization agent (ev3 Neurovascular, Irvine, CA) to embolize the lesion via the transarterial route. Outcomes: The OHC resolved spontaneously after the e...

Third ventricular colloid cyst causing acute hydrocephalus during early pregnancy: Clinical lessons from a case
CONCLUSION: This case illustrates that urinary pregnancy test may show false negative result but pregnancy should not preclude radiological investigation and neurosurgical intervention in patients with deteriorating neurological function.PMID:33654557 | PMC:PMC7911210 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_724_2020
