Dendritic and Synaptic Degeneration in Pyramidal Neurons of the Sensorimotor Cortex in Neonatal Mice With Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus
This study evaluated the effect of hydrocephalus on dendritic arborization and synaptic structure of the pyramidal neurons of the sensorimotor cortex of neonatal hydrocephalic mice. Sterile kaolin suspension (0.01 ml of 250 mg/mL) was injected intracisternally into day old mice. Control animals mice received sham injections. Pups were weighed and sacrificed on postnatal days (PND) 7, 14 and 21. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy for pediatric tumor-associated hydrocephalus.
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of tumor-related hydrocephalus with ETV is common and is warranted in select pediatric patient populations. Failure rates are overall similar to those of VPS for tumor-associated hydrocephalus. PMID: 31896082 [PubMed - in process]

Frequency and treatment of hydrocephalus prior to and after posterior fossa tumor surgery in adult patients
ConclusionThe frequency of hydrocephalus prior to posterior fossa tumor surgery in adult patients is 21.4% and therefore much lower than in respective reports of pediatric patients. The risk of persistent hydrocephalus and newly developed hydrocephalus after tumor surgery was very low, too (5.7 and 2.1%, respectively). An ETV is not justified in every adult patient prior to posterior fossa tumor surgery.

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt versus Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in the treatment of Obstructive Hydrocephalus in Pediatric Midline Posterior Fossa tumors
ConclusionThe shorter duration of surgery, the lower incidence of morbidity, the absence of mortality, the lower incidence of procedure failure of endoscopic third ventriculostomy as compared to ventriculoperitoneal shunt, and the significant advantage of not becoming shunt dependent make endoscopic third ventriculostomy to be recommended as the first choice in the treatment of pediatric patients with marked obstructive hydrocephalus due to posterior fossa tumors. It is a preliminary, simple, safe, effective, physiological, minimally invasive procedure for the relief of elevated intracranial pressure before direct tumor removal.

Lower rates of symptom recurrence and surgical revision after primary compared with secondary endoscopic third ventriculostomy for obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis in adults.
CONCLUSIONS Patients with obstructive hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis exhibit symptomatic improvement after ETV, with a relatively low failure rate. Patients with a primary history of shunt placement who undergo ETV as a secondary intervention are at increased risk of symptom recurrence and need for surgical revision post-ETV. Natural History, Treatment Outcomes and Quality of Life in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH)
Conclusions: The natural history for untreated patients with iNPH is poor, with both increased mortality and morbidity. It is strongly recommended that practitioners follow established guidelines to select patients with suspected iNPH while using objective measures of gait, balance, and cognition for consideration of treatment with a CSF shunt. Role of surgical procedures (VP shunt and ETV) in tuberculous meningitis with hydrocephalus (TBMH): A systematic review
Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the average percentage of good outcome after ETV than VPS, and complication rate was also slightly lower after ETV than VPS during the chronic phase of illness. So during the acute phase of illness VPS placement is preferred whereas in the chronic burnout phase ETV is preferred because poor anatomy leads to more complications with ETV during the acute phase of the disease.

Is Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy a Feasible Option or Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt a Safer Bet for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Hydrocephalus ? A Gap Time Model-based Algorithm
