The prognostic significance of surgically treated hydrocephalus in leptomeningeal metastases.
CONCLUSIONS: The leptomeningeal metastases were often associated with hydrocephalus and the surgical treatment was helpful in limited patients. The prognosis was related with RTOG-RPA class and treatment of local and systemic treatment. PMID: 24635931 [PubMed - in process]

Ventricular size determination and management of ventriculomegaly and hydrocephalus in patients with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma: an institutional experience
CONCLUSIONS: Although ventriculomegaly can be present in up to 55% of patients with DIPG, the majority of patients present with asymptomatic ventriculomegaly and do not require surgical interventions. In some cases ventriculomegaly improved after medical management with steroids and RT. CSF diversion for hydrocephalus at the time of diagnosis does not impact survival. In contrast, our results suggest a survival advantage in patients who undergo CSF diversion for hydrocephalus at the time of progression, albeit that advantage is likely to be confounded by biological and individual patient factors. Further research in this a...

Acute hydrocephalus due to a primary malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the cervicothoracic junction: A case report and review of the literature.
CONCLUSION: Primary malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the spine is a very aggressive tumor with a very high recurrence rate, significant potential for metastasis and very poor overall prognosis. They may present with features of more frequent diseases, such as peripheral neuropathies and may be overlooked as in our case. Thus, suspected cases should undergo a more detailed examination. Infantile Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor of the Spine Presenting with Acute Hydrocephalus
Conclusions: In infants presenting with acute hydrocephalus where an obvious intracranial cause is not detected, the whole neuraxis should be screened. However, despite aggressive measures and advances in multimodality treatment, prognosis of ATRT remains dismal.Pediatr Neurosurg

Primary malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the spine with acute hydrocephalus: a rare clinical entity.
Abstract Primary malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are extremely rare in patients without a history of neurofibromatosis; only 18 cases have been reported in the English-language literature to this point. The authors report their experience with 1 new case of a primary MPNST. A 33-year-old woman presented with low-back pain radiating to the right calf that progressed over 1 year. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine revealed an intradural extramedullary lesion at the T12-L1 level. The patient was diagnosed with primary MPNST, underwent two surgical excisions and radiation therapy, and developed ...

Outcomes and risk factors of surgical management of thyroid eye disease-related diplopia
CONCLUSION: Strabismus surgery in TED patients resulted in a high success rate in reducing diplopia and improving ocular motility. The success rate was not negatively associated with previous therapies. Indeed, resolution of diplopia required more squint procedures in patients who have previously undergone to orbital decompression.PMID:35225021 | DOI:10.1177/11206721221083836

A Case Report: Primary Glioblastoma of the Pineal (P7.272)
Conclusion:Based on a literature review, since the 1972 report of Bradfield and Perez, only 18 cases were reported, not including the one described here. A SEERs database review showed 9 registered cases of WHO Grade IV gliomas from 1973-2005. As with our patient, symptoms related to hydrocephalus and Parinaud’s syndrome tend to be the most common presentation. Imaging modalities such as CT and contrast MRI imaging is important in the initial evaluation of the patient, final diagnosis is made on histologic basis. Albeit extremely rare in the pineal region, this case along with others previously described, continues t...

Ventriculomegaly in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) (P1.179)
Conclusions:These few patients suggest that ventriculomegaly develops insidiously in patients with GBM and that diagnosis is often delayed. We are initiating a larger retrospective study to develop criteria to identify patients at risk for developing hydrocephalus and to identify those who would benefit from VPS.Disclosure: Dr. Miranda has nothing to disclose. Clinical Efficacy of CyberKnife Radiosurgery for Adult Brainstem Glioma: 10 Years Experience at Tianjin CyberKnife Center and Review of the Literature
Conclusion: The efficacy of brainstem gliomas—treated with CyberKnife is efficacious with mild toxicity. Introduction Brainstem gliomas (BSGs) account for 5–15% of brain tumors and more likely happen in children (1). BSGs constitute at least 20% of childhood brain neoplasms (2), and the peak age is 7–9 years. In contrast, BSGs is rare in the adult population and account for only 1.5–2.5% of brain glioma, with a peak age of 40–70 years (1). Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma(DIPG) was the most common type of BSG is that could invade the whole brainstem including midbrain, pons as ...

A quantitative analysis of craniopharyngioma cyst expansion during and after radiation therapy and surgical implications.
CONCLUSIONS Craniopharyngioma cyst expansion occurred in approximately 40% of the patients during or after radiotherapy. In the majority of patients, cyst expansion was a self-limiting process and did not confer a worse outcome. During radiotherapy, cyst expansion may be apparent on image-guided radiation therapy. Adaptive IMRT planning may be required to ensure that the intended IMRT dose covers the entire tumor and cyst volume. The sequelae of cyst expansion include progressive hydrocephalus, which may be treated with a shunt. For patients with solitary cyst expansion, cyst aspiration and/or intracystic interferon may re...

Pineal Apoplexy: A Case Series and Review of the Literature
Conclusion Clinical significance of hemorrhagic pineal apoplexy ranges from an asymptomatic course to rapid deterioration and death. In patients with mild symptoms, observation is indicated, whereas surgical treatment is reserved for severe cases presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus and includes cerebrospinal fluid diversion, resection of apoplectic pineal lesions, or both.
