Exercise-induced changes of cerebrospinal fluid vascular endothelial growth factor in adult chronic hydrocephalus patients
Publication date: Available online 21 October 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Jun Yang, Kaitlyn J. Shanahan, Leah P. Shriver, Mark G. Luciano Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a growth factor demonstrated to be a key factor in cerebral angiogenesis and neurogenesis. It has been considered a critical component in hippocampus neurogenesis and memory formation and has been observed to increase in the rat hippocampus after exercise. We previously found increased VEGF levels in experimental chronic hydrocephalus in several brain areas and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), suggesting a role in t...

Rehabilitation for a complex patient following cerebellar hemorrhage and obstructive hydrocephalus: A case report.
Abstract BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Inpatient rehabilitation facilities play an integral role in patient progress post-stroke. Cerebellar hemorrhages are an infrequent type of stroke and are therefore less discussed in the literature; however, inpatient rehabilitation continues to be an integral part of patient recovery. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the physical therapy interventions, challenges, and successes for a complex patient with a large cerebellar hemorrhage with obstructive hydrocephalus. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 32-year-old male admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation facilit...

Outcomes Following LSVT BIG in a Person With Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: A Case Report.
DISCUSSION: Therapists may wish to consider the use of the LSVT BIG program in persons with iNPH; however, a longer program and/or regular tune-up sessions may be necessary for best outcomes.Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A315). Outcomes of Chiari malformation III: A review of literature
Conclusion: CM III is a rare anomaly which usually carries a bad prognosis, but death is not ultimate, and there may be a minority who carry good prognosis. This bad prognosis pushes some parents to refuse surgery otherwise repair should be done. With good pre- and postoperative care, physical therapy, and follow-up, the outcome is reasonable.

What Causes Ataxia?
Discussion Coordination and balance problems are caused by various problems affecting the central and peripheral nervous system. Normal development of a child or weakness of a child are commonly mistaken for true ataxia. Ataxia specifically refers to “…impairment of the coordination of movement without loss of muscle strength.” If it is purely due to abnormalities of the cerebellum then there should be no changes in mental status, sensation or weakness. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if there are abnormalities in other areas. For example, Guillian-Barre often presents with difficulty or clumsy wal...

Central Conditions Mimicking Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Case Series
Discussion: The presence of central positioning nystagmus may be the sole presenting feature of serious neurological conditions such as posterior fossa tumor. It is recommended that a diagnosis of BPPV can only be made if Dix-Hallpike or supine roll maneuver elicits nystagmus that is consistent with BPPV. Any features of the nystagmus, which are not consistent with BPPV, should raise suspicion of central pathology, and warrant further investigation. Video Abstract available for more insights from the authors (see Video Abstract, Supplemental Digital Content 1, available at: http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A265).

What Problems are Ciliopathies Associated With?
Discussion Nephronophthisis (NPHP) one cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) usually occurring before age 30 years. NPHP is a non-motile ciliopathy affecting cellular sensing in the renal tubular epithelium. See To Learn More below. The incidence varies according to location with 1:1 million in the US but 1:50,000 in Finland. There are 3 subtypes: Infantile Occurs usually within 1 year of life Enlarged kidneys and severe hypertension In utero can have oligohydramnios problems such as pulmonary hypoplasia, facial dysmorphisms, limb contractures Extra-renal problems include congenital heart disease, liver fibrosis, recur...

Refractory psychiatric symptoms and seizure associated with Dandy-Walker syndrome: A case report and literature review
Conclusion: VPS placement surgery at an earlier stage may be an effective way to avoid inevitable brain damage so as to improve the clinical outcomes for patients with DWS. Age of IndependentSitting Posture Acquisition for Children with Myelomeningocele (P6.326)
CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that most part of the sample acquired independent sitting posture, including thoracic levels that reached this milestone with age that was less than the one found in the literature. The results can be considered positive, adding the possible contribution for the early physiotherapy intervention in the acquisition of motor milestones in the promotion of functionality and in the quality of life improvement for children with MMC.Disclosure: Dr. Amaral has nothing to disclose. How Common Are Brain Tumors Seen in Spasmus Nutans?
Discussion Nystagmus is periodic eye movement that is involuntary where there is a slow drift of fixation. The slow drift can be followed by a fast saccade back to fixation. The pathological movement is the slow phase, but nystagmus is described by the fast phase (i.e. horizontal nystagmus, vertical nystagmus). Spasmus nutans (SN) is a movement disorder that is rare. The classic triad includes nystagmus, head bobbing or titubation, and torticollis, with these problems being in the absence of any ophthalmological or neurological condition. Onset is in the first year of life but ranges from 6-36 months. Time to resolution ...
