Novel loci for ocular axial length identified through extreme-phenotype genome-wide association study in Chinese populations
CONCLUSION: Our study identified two population-specific novel loci for AL, expanding our understanding of the genetic basis of AL and providing evidence for a role of the nervous system and glucose metabolism in myopia pathogenesis.PMID:37524447 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323596

Handheld chromatic pupillometry can reliably detect functional glaucomatous damage in eyes with high myopia
CONCLUSION: PLRs to ramping-up light stimuli are unaltered in highly myopic eyes without other diagnosed ocular conditions. Conversely, HCP can distinguish glaucomatous functional loss in eyes with HM and can be a useful tool to detect/confirm the presence of glaucoma in patients with HM.PMID:37524446 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323878

Eyes and the heart: what a clinician should know
Heart. 2023 Jul 28:heartjnl-2022-322081. doi: 10.1136/heartjnl-2022-322081. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe eye is prone to various forms of afflictions, either as a manifestation of primary ocular disease or part of systemic disease, including the cardiovascular system. A thorough cardiovascular examination should include a brief ocular assessment. Hypertension and diabetes, for example, would present with retinopathy and dyslipidaemia would present with corneal arcus. Multisystem autoimmune diseases, such as Graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis and sarcoidosis, would present with proptosis, episcleritis and scleritis,...
