The next iPhone is here
Apple just had it’s new iPhone event and you can catch up with the news from the Verge’s excellent coverage. While the 5s will be the flag ship phone some will love to upgrade to given the amazing camera, better harwdware specs and unique fingerprint sensor technology, it’s always been the premium price point which has made Apple’s market share a diminishing number in the face of the Android onslaught. Confirmation that the 5c is a reality was no surprise and the contract price of $99 and $199 for the 8Gb and 32Gb models respectively sounds competitive but Apple did not announce the off contract pri...

digiDoc Pulse Oximeter
Getting excited by testing a new beta application for the iPhone! For the first time it is possible to assess both heart rate and oxygen saturation levels using only a smartphone. Pulse oximeters measure peripheral oxygen saturation by analysing the absorption of red and infrared light by pulsatile blood. This usually occurs at the fingertip or ear. Oximeters are becoming increasingly portable, inexpensive and wireless…but they are still an additional piece of equipment. Enter digiDoc, a 2013 Norwegian based MedTech company. They have harnessed the technology available in an iOS7 operating iPhone using the camer...

An Apple a Day: What the iPhone Can Teach Us About Health Care
What took Apple so long to get in to health care? Here’s my suggestion from 5 years ago: The day before my daughter Elise’s 15th birthday, the new iPhone went on sale.  My birthday was 4 days later.  So Elise figured out we should buy each other an iPhone to mark our big days.  She planned (and saved) for months.  She spent weeks talking to friends, researching apps on line, planning for such accessories as protective covers, and educating herself on how to maximize her minutes. When the big day came, we made our way to the Apple store and stood shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of others waiting on a ver...

What the iPhone 6 bendgate can teach us about vaccines
I received my new thinner bigger iPhone.  Within a few days, news reports highlighted how new iPhone 6 owners accidentally bent the latest Apple iteration of the modern smartphone. A blogger bent an iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hands. This story, the subsequent fallout, and response has learnings for doctors and health care on the challenges facing the vaccination “debate.” The best launch in iPhone history with roughly 10 million smartphones shipped was drowned out by bendgate which trended on social media and the news. Could Apple Be Trying to Develop a " Patient Portal " for the iPhone?
Apple has periodically experimented with various products for the healthcare market because it accounts for such a large percentage of the economy. There even has been periodic speculation that the company thus might try to compete in the EHR space (see:Could Amazon or Apple actually make a dent in the EHR market?). Here's a quote from this article:"It will be an uphill battle [for Apple in the EHR market], especially if they try to compete in the larger segments of the market," said Bryan Fiekers, Senior Director of Research Services at HIMSS Analytics.....John Moore, founder and managing partner of Chilmark...

Young men and women have very different attitudes towards touch in cross-sex friendships
Friendships between heterosexual men and women can be tricky to navigate, especially when it comes to tactile contact. Is that touch on the arm a gesture of platonic care and affection? Or an unwanted signal of sexual interest? A new survey by US researchers shows the situation is complicated by the contrasting attitudes of young men and women towards touch in cross-sex friendships.Michael Miller and his team quizzed 276 undergrads at an Eastern US University, including 128 women*. The participants were asked to consider a current or recent cross-sex friendship, and then they answered questions about the intimacy of this f...

Neuro Harlow: The effect of a mother's touch on her child's developing brain
In the 1950s, the American psychologist Harry Harlow famously showed that infant rhesus monkeys would rather cling to a surrogate wire mother covered in cosy cloth, than to one that provided milk. A loving touch is more important even than food, the findings seemed to show. Around the same time, the British psychoanalyst John Bowlby documented how human children deprived of motherly contact often go on to develop psychological problems. Now this line of research has entered the neuroscience era with a study in Cerebral Cortex claiming that children with more tactile mothers tend to have more developed social brains. Jen...
