OMG! That icon is a button!Today my finger brushed the blue insulin “volume” icon at the top right of my pump’s home screen and it opened a new menu called “current status.” Basically, it’s an executive summary of the settings the pump is using in the moment. It tells me what profile is being used, the right-this-second basal drip, the last bolus, the current carb ratio, the current correction factor, my BG target, and more. That’s cool.Oh, and speaking of the screen, I can’t recall if I told you or not, but the pump’s screen is pretty amazing. It features bold, bright colors on a black background. It look...

Vscan Portable Sono
The applications of ultrasound in medicine are expanding quickly. One example is in critical care monitoring where it is rapidly gaining acceptance for determination of fluid status in a patient. Now GE is releasing their Vscan sono. At a price of $7900, it should allow it to reach the bedside in more ICU's. It has such features as an hour of battery life, portability, and a USB dock to download images. Until the iPod Touch gets an ultrasound app, this may be as portable as it gets.MoreMedicine TagHealth Tag Save This Page

Once you’ve gone Mac, there’s no turning back
This blogger has been a Windows user for years. My last laptop, the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook, is actually pretty good. Boot up is quick, and turning on from sleep mode is pretty quick but the battery life is now dismal, being not more than about 2 hours or so of juice after a full charge. It runs Windows 7 and I looked at the Windows 8 notebook options around and I thought, no, none really appeal to me. I turned to Apple as an alternative. Apple devices are no strangers to my house – we have an iPad (gen 1), iPad mini, iPod touch and 2 iPhones. But no Mac. I have used Macs at work but that’s about my only experie...

Most of us have some insight into our personality traits, but how self-aware are we in the moment?
Correlations between momentary self-views and observed behaviour, from Sun and Vazire, 2018. By guest blogger Jesse Singal Your ability to accurately understand your own thoughts and behaviour in a given moment can have rather profound consequences. If you don’t realise you’re growing loud and domineering during a heated company meeting, that could affect your standing at work. If you react in an oversensitive manner to a fair and measured criticism levelled at you by your romantic partner, it could spark a fight. It’s no wonder, then, that psychology researchers are interested in the question of how well people und...

Google Dominates Global Search Even More than Desktop Search
I find myself searching the web much more frequently with my smartphone these days because the screen is relatively large, the response is quick, and there are some features available such as verbal search that I find useful. I had not thought about it, but it turns out that Google dominates mobile search even more than desktop search. This fact was highlighted in a recent news article (see: Mobile Apps Drive Rapid Change in Searches): When the Federal Trade Commission decided last week to close its antitrust investigation of Google without charges, one important factor, though hardly mentioned, was just beneath the ...

mySugr Companion – Meet “Chewcarba!”
I’m very excited to help announce the launch of mySugr Companion here in the U.S. I have been working with the team on the launch for a little while now. I not only love the app itself, but also the attitude and vision for diabetes management they have. The more I work with them and get to know them, the more I like them. mySugr Companion launched in Europe in late 2011 and has seen impressive reception. When a friend of mine, Kyle Rose (who now works on the mySugr team), introduced it to me I was hesitant. I thought about many of the other apps I’ve tried that haven’t kept me interested, or I would run i...

Drug and Diseases search app updated for #webapp, #android and coming soon #iOS
Drug and Disease search is a continuing project of mine which originated from the old webOS version (anyone still using webOS??). It was a necessity back then as there were no Drug reference apps for webOS (Epocrates was the only one for webOS and they pulled out). I still find it very useful as long as you have an Internet connection as it is lightweight, and fast. You don’t have to have installed drug databases and constantly have to update these. Just hit the Search and look up the same drug in multiple data sources in a very short period of time. After the untimely demise of webOS from mobile devices I had to mov...
