TechTool review of Survive Sepsis by John Richardson on iOS  (reviewed on iPhone) Website: – iTunes - Website Survive Sepsis offers guidance for clinicians to recognise and treat sepsis in adult patients quickly and effectively Design and User Interface First off, the app looks great.  I love the colours and the design as a whole.  The bottom tab bar has stylish icons and all text is clearly displayed on screen.  Even the checkboxes seem to have flair.  Good work to whoever did the graphics. The UI, however, has some problems.  I think the aim is for it to be a flowchart of some sort but it doesn’t feel s...

TechTool review of  EM Procedure Log by Baker Hamilton on iOS  Website: – iTunes - Website EM Procedure Log is a simple way of keeping a log of clinical activity.  This can be procedures as the title suggests but could also be cases, presentations or other useful logs.  Data is stored on the phone and can be shared via dropbox. Design and User Interface It is a very basic design and will not drive you wild with excitement.  On the other hand I had no problems using the app – the UI is clear and obvious.  No instructions are required to make full use of the app and that’s a sign of a good UI. EM Procedu...

TechTool review of Critical Medical Guide by The Barringer Group, LLC on iOS and Android Website: – iTunes - Android - Website Critical is an emergency medicine and general medicine reference app that provides the user with guidelines and information about treatment.  It has a large range of resources including videos, images, calculators and scoring systems. Design and User Interface Clearly they’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making it appear lovely – and it really shows.  The customised icons are very nicely designed and there are some interesting extra features like the page curling up when the ...

ACC Welcomes New CEO!
It is my pleasure to announce that Shalom “Shal” Jacobovitz has been selected as the ACC’s new chief executive officer (CEO).  Shal was chosen as CEO following a year-long nationwide search led by executive search firm, Korn/Ferry International. He will assume his new role in the coming weeks. Shal comes to the ACC from Actelion Pharmaceuticals, U.S., a biopharmaceutical company specializing in cardio-pulmonary therapies, where he has served as president since 2004. Prior to Actelion, he held positions at F. Hoffmann La Roche, including serving as general manager for Central America and the Caribbe...

TechTool review of Cranial Nerve iExam by Sylian on iOS      Website: – iTunes - Website Cranial Nerve iExamination was designed by two medical students at Monash University. It takes you through completing a cranial nerve assessment and helps interpret the findings. Design and User Interface What I like about this app is that the developers have made an effort to do something new and different.  They could have just listed points.  For examples, for CN V motor: clench jaw; raise eyebrows; screw up eyes.  Instead they have put in pictures of someone actually doing these tasks.  These design elements make t...

Medicalc for iPhone – free for a limited time
Don’t we love free apps! Personally I have been a long time user of Medcalc ever since the PalmOS days, and currently what’s on my iPhone is Medcalc Pro which is no longer free but $4.99 on iTunes – still worth it IMO. Medcalc Pro however lacks Haematology modules (and only has a smattering of Oncology ones) so I was interested to come across Medicalc for iPhone as it contains HemeOnc modules, and it is free for a limited time on iTunes (download link) I find Medicalc okay though the interface is not as slick as Medcalc Pro (which also gives you the ability to store patient data as well as favorites ̵...

My son learns algebra on his iPhone via DragonBox
Friggin awesome. That's what I got from the look on #1's face when he solved an equation with x on one side, and a numeric expression on the other. He was doing algebra, he knew it, he was proud.Damn, that was the best $6 I've ever spent.#1 is entering 10th grade next year in the special needs modification program. He reads at about a 4th grade level (perhaps less) and struggles with basic arithmetic and time calculations. Despite years of practice he can't do long division by hand. Despite this reality, he declined the standard transition programs for a regular junior high academic schedule -- though we worked him down fro...

TechTool review of PalmEM by PalmER Worldwide LLC on iOS  and Android    Website: – iTunes - Android - Website Last year I reviewed PalmEM’s younger sibling PalmPedi and I really liked it.  PalmEM includes the PalmPedi content, and aims to cover everything you might need to know about Emergency Medicine).  Is that really possible?  It just might be. Design and User Interface Simple, clean and lovely.  As with any text-based app, it is difficult to make it interesting for the user.  But this app does it as best as any I’ve seen.  The text is clearly readable with no distractions, but there are a few ...

Shadow Puppet: An App That Lets iPhone Pictures Tell a Story
They say a picture is worth that thousand words, but nowhere is this more true than with a new, free, iPhone app called Shadow Puppet that lets you turn selected photographs on your iPhone into a narrated video storyline. I saw this app reviewed over at Techcrunch and immediately saw its potential as a teaching aid.  The app allows you to pick a series of iPhone photos from your camera roll,
