Smartphone for all: Android or iPhone?
I’ve rewritten the “which smartphone” section of my Smartphones for All: Independent Living with iPhone and Android book at least four times.Despite my iPhone background I started out leaning towards Android for my book audience — I have not been entirely happy with Apple’s iCloud services and I was impressed by the value for dollar of my moto E. Then I spent some more time with my Android phone; trying to see it from the perspective of a “Guide” reader and “Explorer” user. That experience helped me understand why my Calendaring Survey showed a strong iPhone bias among non-experts who use a Calendar an...

MMGuardian - Review of an iPhone parental control and usage monitoring service
Yesterday I wrote about using MMGuardian with an Android device. Today I’m continuing research for my book project and my upcoming local (St Paul, MN) presentation on May 25th by reviewing MMGuardian on an iPhone.Google and Apple have taken very different approaches to remote restrictions on mobile devices. Google has almost no built in restriction capabilities, but third party products like MMGuardian or Screen Time can dig deep into the operating system. They can monitor and disable SMS or phone services and they can lock the phone on a schedule. I haven’t used MMGuardian enough to know if this affects battery l...

Upcoming iPhone 5S Features the “M7 Coprocessor” to Create a New Level of Health and Fitness Apps
The highly-anticipated Apple iPhone 5S was finally released this week to much media fanfare. And while there were hardly any features that the rumor mills hadn’t already leaked, one somewhat unexpected highlight was the addition of the M7 copro...

An Ophthalmic Photo and Video Tool for the iPhone
I purchased a neat little tool that allows me to use my iPhone 6s to take videos and photographs of the external surface of the eye. I am still learning how to maximize the photographs and videos, but the clinical and educational possibilities are really exciting. The Eidolon Photo Bluminator has the potential to take excellent still photographs and high-quality videos of the external surface of the eye. This tool allows photo filters that have blue LED light for fluorescein photos of the cornea or white LED illumination for photos of the anterior segment. Both are options for taking photos or shooting video. The lens provi...

TechTool review of  LactMed by National Library of Medicine on iOS and Android Website: – iTunes - Android - Website LactMed provides information about the side effects of medicines when breastfeeding.  It is part of the National Library of Medicine’s Toxicology Data Network.  The user searches for the drug they are prescribing and detailed results come back from the database about potential adverse effects. Design and User Interface It would be fair to say the design is pretty boring.  But then it is just a drug toxicity database, so the need to jazz that up is questionable.  The UI is certainly clear.  ...

Intestinal Ova Detected by iPhone Camera in Tanzania
The idea of using an iPhone to run health apps and for various types of physiologic monitoring with plug-in devices has been much in the news (see: Patients as Monitors of Their Own Health; Conflation of Health Monitoring by Mobile Devices with Access to EMR & PHR Data; Healthcare Consumers as Self-Trackers; Process Enabled by New Apps). A recent article raises the possibility of using the iPhone camera for the diagnosis of intestinal worm infections in rural Tanzania (see: Worms detected by converted iPhone microscope). Below is an excerpt from it: Scientists used an iPhone 4S to diagnose intestinal worm i...

The New Public Relations
When users of a consumer software vendor’s product took to the company website to complain about a recent update, they did something unique. They got the software developer to visit the forum for a question and answer session that lasted for an entire week, covering everything from why the UI had changed from previous versions, to why certain features were added or removed. In the end, not everyone was satisfied, but a few product evangelists came out on social media to talk about the success of that question and answer session. When critics of your brand can launch viral campaigns alleging misdoing by your company, you ...

TechTool review 3D Health by Archie MD on iOS Website: – iTunes - Website 3D Health provides 3D digital animation videos in order to be able to effectively explain procedures or conditions to your patients Design and User Interface It’s ok. But for the cost of the app, I’d expect something a little prettier. For example, on the iPhone version all the buttons are crushed together at the top. If you actually wanted to share an image with someone you’d need tiny fingers to be able to press the share button. This is a bad design flaw in an app by a well-established company. The interactive human body section has ...

Video: Materialism and Happiness
Apple’s iPhone 7 is coming out this year, and it’s going to be the greatest iPhone yet. Maybe the greatest smartphone yet. It’s going to complete your life. At least until the iPhone 8 comes out. That’s really going to be the greatest iPhone yet. Buying stuff is fun because the coolest phone or shirt or toaster or whatever always seems to be the one we don’t have. Once I buy this snazzy new gadget or item of clothing or household appliance, then I’ll be happy! Of course, we know in our heart of hearts that it doesn’t quite work that way. You get the iPhone 7, and pretty soon you ge...

TechTool review of  Medrills – Airway by ArchieMD, Inc on iOS and Android  Website: – iTunes - Android - Website Medrills Airway is a simulation app like no other.  It is primarily aimed at paramedics but could be useful for ED medics too.  The module provides instruction on good airway management followed by some simulated scenarios and questions to test and develop your skills.   There are 15 modules available to buy separately including: pneumothorax, fractures, IV access and haemorrhage. Design and User Interface The patient simulation in the app is better than I have seen in any mobile app.  The...
