Better Living Through Better Design
BY KIM BELLARD We’re almost two weeks past Hurricane Ian. Most of us weren’t in its path and so it just becomes another disaster that happened to other people, but to those people most impacted it is an ongoing challenge: over a hundred people dead, hundreds of thousands still without power, tens of thousands facing a housing crisis due to destroyed/damaged homes, and estimated $67b in damages.  It will take years of rebuilding to recover.   In the wake of a natural disaster like a hurricane – or a tornado, a flood, even a pandemic – it’s easy to shrug our shoulders and say, well, it’s Mother Nature, wh...

The Evident Good of Treating Aging as a Medical Condition
It seems a little strange that advocates for aging research must still make the argument that it is a good thing to prevent people from becoming sick and dying. This seems self-evident! It is true that prevention and cure of disease is a goal with widespread support when discussing specific diseases or age-related conditions. Yet, somehow, as soon as one starts to talk about treating aging as a medical condition, the root cause of the majority of disease and suffering, we are right back to objections that amount to defending a world in which people become sick and die. It is a strange situation that is hard to understand. ...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –24th September, 2022.
This article makes the case and explains what will be required to make it happen. We hear a lot about “digital health” these days. As data about our health piles up — thanks to sources like electronic health records, personal fitness apps and gadgets, and home genome test kits — weshould understand a lot more than we used to about what ’s wrong with our health and what to do about it. But having a lot of data is not enough. We have to be aware of what we have, understand what it means, and act on that understanding. While the challenges are in some ways more acute in the United States because of its fragmented sys...

4AM Night
It’s 4 AM. The hospital—once a lively and bustling place with residents responding to codes, nurses checking vitals, physical therapists helping patients walk—is now deadly silent. I stare out of the window into the darkness. Its eerily quiet. I think to myself, only 3 more hours until I am done with my night shift and get to crawl into bed. I am counting the hours. My phone beeps and I look down. It’s a message from my resident. “New admit in the ED with SOB. Interview the patient and present to me.” I chart and read about her history. She has breast cancer with extensive chemo and radiotherapy. I think ...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –10th September, 2022.
This article is adapted fromVoices in the Code: A Story About People, Their Values, and the Algorithm They Made, out Sept. 8 from Russell Sage Foundation Press. In May 2021, I got a call I never expected. I was working on abook about A.I. ethics, focused on the algorithm that gives out kidneys to transplant patients in the United States. Darren Stewart —a data scientist from UNOS, the nonprofit that runs the kidney allocation process—was calling to get my take: How many decimal places should they include when calculating each patient’s allocation score? The score is an incredibly important number, given it determines w...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –27th August 2022.
In this study, researchers gathered a diverse group of participants; 43 percent were Black, and 68 percent were women. They also considered factors such as age and insurance status when drawing conclusions. The study occurred through a clinical trial, where all participants were randomly assigned to have their next visit occur through either phone or video-based platforms. The central unit of measurement was visit satisfaction rate, reported on a ten-point scale. Researchers noted noninferiority data based on whether patient satisfaction between the telehealth methods exceeded a -15 percent margin.-----https://www.theverge....

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 22nd 2022
In conclusion, application of a multi-species bat epigenetic clock provides strong evidence that hibernation is associated with slower epigenetic ageing. The multi-species clock explains 94% of the variation in the chronological ages of both hibernating and non-hibernating big brown bats; however, the clock estimates are equal to or greater than the chronological age, suggesting big brown bats age slightly faster than a 'typical' bat, especially during the active period.
