Its Not Just A Cold Anymore
I got a cold last Sunday. This is day 8. While I feel better mostly, I know better than to push myself. Hence I stayed home mostly for a week. I did not go to the gym. I did not contaminate my knitting group full of cancer people who would not welcome germs. I didn ' t take my 88 year old father to his doctor appointments. I skipped all July Fourth events. I didn ' t do much of anything beside catching up on my knitting and going on an emergency kleenex run when I ran out. (And getting stung by wasps when I inadvertently discovered the wasp nest six feet from our front door.)I did all that on purpose. My goal is not to be ...

Waiting Around
I hate waiting. I pride myself on being on time. I think that people who constantly run late are rude and selfish because they are making people wait on them. They are not considering anyone else ' s feelings or needs. Basically that is just damn rude.Social occasions aside, waiting for doctors is even worse. Especially when you are not feeling well. This is one reason why I do not like Emergency Rooms and will only go if I am literally dripping blood (and will therefore be put to the front of the line) is I can ' t stand waiting around.A year or so ago, my opthamologist asked me to find a new one. BasicallyI got fired by ...

10 Summer Depression Busters
Although my mood seems to be better with more sun, I understand why a substantial number of folks get more depressed in the summer. Extreme heat is hard to tolerate. In fact, in a study published in Science in 2013, researchers reported that as temperatures rose, the frequency of interpersonal violence increased by 4 percent, and intergroup conflicts by 14 percent. There are four distinct types of people when it comes to weather and mood, according to a study published in Emotion in 2011. Summer Lovers (better mood with warmer and sunnier weather) Unaffected (weak associations between weather and mood) Summer Hater...

People Are Still People Even With Cancer
Life does not stop with a cancer diagnosis. It should not. If you have cancer, you are still a person. You do not need to let cancer take over everything. You are still a human being and need to do normal human being things. Like going on vacation. Or moving to another state. If you want to go on a vacation, all you need to do is talk to your oncologist and they will help you figure out what changes need to be made. If you are in the middle of chemo, you can probably take a week off. Its not that complicated.Your cancer diagnosis does not get to swallow you whole and take over everything in your life. People in cancer treat...

Shopping for sunscreen: Are all brands equal?
Last week in the playground another mom remarked that she had just ordered all her sunscreen from Europe: “They have much better ingredients. I ordered one with Tinosorb.” This conversation ironically occurred on the same day that I was asked to write this post and I realized that my sunscreen knowledge was a bit passé. As I started to research sunscreen ingredients — in both medical journals and blogs — I discovered why Americans are compelled to go to international markets to find the “best” products. What is indisputable is the need to protect skin from both UVA and UVB — the type of cancer-causing rays t...

This is America
In America, we have millions uninsured (even after the ACA), high deductible plans and ten thousand dollar per month chemotherapy treatments for desperate patients with stage IV disease. In America, alone among western democracies, medical bills represent the leading cause of personal bankruptcy. In America, we choose to commodify the health care sector, transform it into a vast, complex money generating machine. This is the American way: free markets, personal responsibility, distrust of government interference. And so it ought to surprise no one that some private companies (fromBloomberg) see opportunity in...

15 Self Development Lies (and some are whoppers!)
The self development industry is worth in the region of $10 billion per annum in the United States. And that doesn’t include the fitness and weight loss industries, so primarily we’re looking at books, audios and seminars. That is officially a shit load of books, audios and seminars being sold to Americans every year in the hope that they can improve the quality of their lives. Some people will, but most won’t. For the most part it’s down to the fact that most people don’t do anything with the information they acquire. According to the expression, ‘knowledge is power’. But like some of the information...

More News I Don ' t Need
You know they tell us that evil cancer cells come out of the nasty cancer tumors and send them secretly through your body so that they show up later as unwanted metastases. These little cancer cooties (the professional term) are just nasty and unwanted and really want to kill us all in the end.Now we havenew research (because we always need more research) on how metastases occur. Or more correctly where and when the cancer cooties come from the tumors. Earlier research had thought that cancer cells came from the exterior of the cells and not very early." Even in remission, cancer looms. Former cancer patients and their doc...

June 10, 2017current mood: Blessed and InspiredI believe people come into our lives for a reason. Some stay for a while and others for a short time. And even strangers come into our lives for a reason. The selfie above is of a women who I met on a very special day. It was a special day for her and for me. It was March 8 of this year and it was my 10 year Cancerversary and I decided to go for a bike ride. I was just getting back on my bike since my accident and I wanted to do my favorite trail, the Withlacoochee. On my way back I always stop at the same picnic table at Croom Trail. It ' s 5 ...

Taking A Break
It was our anniversary - marriage, not cancer - so we went away for a long weekend to the beach. In Maine. In April. It was 70 something degrees on Saturday - which is a heat wave there. (One of the weather people on TV said it took him a while to adjust to 80 degrees.) The hotel filled up overnight as a result. This is where we were:We really needed a few days off to ourselves. Honestly I think its important to spend time together as a couple without distractions. For a good relationship, you need to work on it. You can ' t expect a happy relationship if you ignore it. We have another trip planned in about three months to...

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
So my life is having its normal ups and downs. There are definitely the good, the bad, and the ugly. What is good? A whole bunch of things:I actually got enough sleep for a couple of nights. I slept late two days this week which helped. Spring is actually springing. I planted some spinach and peas. Both are cold weather tolerant. Spinach actually will not grow in the heat of the summer. I finally see some progress on my SSDI claim. This means I actually heard back from SSDI for more information for the first time in six months. My husband and I went to the beach for a day last weekend when it was 80 degrees.&...
