Matters of the Heart
So I guess I ’m going to talk about this thing, which has nothing to do with disability advocacy or Schuyler, except of course it does, because those are the parts of my life that I couldn’t separate from the rest even if I wanted to, and I very much don’t.Last March, as you might remember, I had a hospital scare that ended in me getting my own health regimen back on track. That day sucked, to be sure, and it was followed by plenty more that were also pretty awful. But it ended up for the best, I suppose. I got better and my health improved to a point where it was more solid than it ’s been in years. I ended up tra...

Podcast: A Delicious Ritual to Reduce Stress
Living in our fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves stressed out, and many others don’t even realize how stressed they’ve become. Many people choose to ignore their stress, others use meditation, exercise, or other endeavors to reduce stress. This episode shares the story of a woman whose solution to stress involves regularly making challah, a traditional Jewish bread. Not only does the ritual of the making of the bread reduce stress, but the history and tradition of the bread are also important to her. Subscribe to Our Show! And Remember to Review Us! A Few Recent Conference Reports from the Aging Research Community
There are more than enough conferences focused on aging and the treatment of aging these days to collectively be called a conference circuit, I think. A researcher in the field of aging could find two or more scientific events every month to attend, and the business side of conference hosting is catching up. I had to give up noting every event of interest a number of years ago for the sake of space, and I know of at least one individual who provides a service to the community by maintaining what is becoming quite a lengthy calendar of conferences. That there are more conferences rather than fewer conferences is a si...

PODCAST: Why People With Mental Illness Should Remove Toxic People From Their Life
Living with mental illness means accepting that some things are out of our control. It also means tolerating annoyances like pillboxes, regular doctor visits, and the symptoms we just can’t quite get under control. But, does living with mental illness mean we have to keep toxic people around us? Do we, as people who are managing a severe and persistent illness, just have to take the abuse that people heap on us because at least we aren’t alone? In this episode, Gabe & Michelle explore tolerating toxic people and whether or not it’s a good idea. Listen now!   SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW “My number on...

Swimming Through Change
What do you love about swimming? For me, I’ve just always loved being in the water and playing games with my friends. Starting from when I was 7 or 8 years old, I walked to our neighborhood pool, met my friends, and we played cards during adult swim, and sharks & minnows when there were enough of us there, and I swam on the swim team until I was 15 years old.  The swimming pool was the fabric of my summer existence. During & after high school, other priorities came up, other sports, other interests, academics and eventually a job.  My first job out of college was with Voyageur Outward Bound School where we ...

Podcast: Visiting a Psych Ward as a Guest after Having Been a Patient
Recently, Michelle had to take a friend to the hospital because of her friend’s thoughts of suicide. This was the first time Michelle had experienced the mental health system from any viewpoint other than that of a patient. In this episode, she describes everything she experienced and how it made her feel. For many people living with mental illness, being committed to a psychiatric hospital is one of our deepest fears. Even people who aren’t mentally ill fear psychiatric hospitals – something that is on public display during Halloween. Our hosts, Gabe & Michelle, have discussed their experiences as patients ...

Can Money Buy You Longevity And Health?
Better treatment options, dietary conditions and (perhaps) less stress could make the life of the rich also healthier. However, when it comes to longevity and aging, do they really have better chances? Can the upper 0.1 percent secure their health for long decades or even reverse the process of growing old? Could society somehow also benefit from the quest of the richest for longevity? Are health and longevity on the shopping list? You can have an awful lot of things with money. For a starter, you can buy ice cream or Nutella, which are synonymous to self-love, so the Beatles was only partly right in singing that you can...

Growing Enthusiasm for the Development of Geroprotectors
A geroprotector is a drug or supplement that either slows the underlying causes of aging or produces a greater resistance to the damage of aging. In either case health is prolonged and mortality decreased. Calorie restriction mimetics are the best example of the type, but the category is expansive enough to include well known drugs such as aspirin. As you might imagine of a class of treatments that includes aspirin, the size of effect when it comes to additional years of life is fairly small, even in those cases in which the benefits are reliable. Geroprotectors largely work through upregulation of stress responses, someth...

Antipsychotics Don ' t Help ICU delirium
by Drew Rosielle (@drosielle)It just gets worse and worse for the idea that antipsychotics have efficacy for delirium.Last year Iposted about the RCT of haloperidol, risperidone, or placebo for delirium symptoms in ' palliative ' patients. I ' m pretty sure I called for more controlled, ' high quality, ' trials, and we are lucky enough to have another. This one is arandomized, double-blinded, registered, controlled trial of haloperidol, ziprasidone, or placebo for ICU delirium, just published in NEJM.The trial took place in a geographically diverse group of US-based intensive care units. They enrolled adult patients in medi...

Monday, October 1, 2018Current Mood:  RelievedSo not sure how to start this blog so I guess I ’ll just start. So, where do single girls go to meet nice guys?  Well that ’s a pretty loaded question with many different answers.  Well this girl turned to “on line dating.”  Let me just start off by saying that I have met some really nice guys on line, sure they weren ’t “Mr. Right” but I’m really starting to question if “Mr. Right” really does exist. So if you ’re looking for a story about a girl meeting “Mr. Right” on line and living happily ever after, move on.  Thi...
