Case Report: Case Series of Kocuria palustris Bacteremia among Immunocompromised Patients
We present three cases of bacteremia in immunocompromised patients admitted to our hospital; one patient was receiving chemotherapy for gall bladder carcinoma, the second was on maintenance hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease, and the third was receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia. All three patients presented with a fever in the setting of neutropenia during the course of treatment with chemotherapy (in Cases 1 and 3) or hemodialysis (in Case 2). The blood culture samples of all the patients had pure isolates of Kocuria species K. palustris, which was identified by matrix assisted laser desorption ionisat...

Assessing the prognostic value of IMDC risk score for nivolumab-treated patients with renal cancer and malignant melanoma
CONCLUSION: In our study, the IMDC was confirmed to be a prognostic factor for MM. The IMDC groups were similar, except for the favorable RCC and MM groups. Different metastatic sites were prognostic, similar to the IMDC risk group in the MM group.PMID:37718781 | DOI:10.3233/CBM-230159

Integration of palliative care in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):1-4. doi: 10.6026/97320630019001. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOral Squamous cell Cancers (OSCC) is strongly associated with tobacco consumption. We here in present a case study of a OSCC patient who refused standard oncological care (SOC), to highlight the importance of integrating palliative care (PC) for improved patient outcomes. A 61 years male patient, with history of chewing tobacco for more than 20 years and diagnosed to have OSCC for 1.5 years presented with severe anaemia and a cauliflower-like growth (12 x 10 cm) in the left oral cavity and cheek with greenish-yellow discharge. Pus ...

Emerging cell cycle related non-coding RNA biomarkers from saliva and blood for oral squamous cell carcinoma
Mol Biol Rep. 2023 Sep 17. doi: 10.1007/s11033-023-08791-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe unnotified or undifferentiable early stages of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) progression are the prime reasons for late-stage detection and poor survival outcomes of oral cancer. This review summarizes the prior research and recent advancements on the influence of dysregulated non-coding RNA (ncRNA) on cell cycle and their employability as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of oral cancer. The literature search was performed using the following keywords: 'serum/saliva non-coding RNAs' and 'serum/saliva non-coding RNAs and ...

MAIT cells confer resistance to Lenvatinib plus anti-PD1 antibodies in hepatocellular carcinoma through TNF-TNFRSF1B pathway
Clin Immunol. 2023 Sep 15:109770. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2023.109770. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe combination of antiangiogenic agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors is more efficient than monotherapy in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Lenvatinib plus anti-PD1 antibodies have become the mainstay in HCC treatment. However, more than half the patients with HCC are non-responsive, and the mechanisms underlying drug resistance are unknown. To address this issue, we performed single-cell sequencing on samples from six HCC patients, aiming to explore cellular signals and molecular pathways related to the e...

Gelatin-based 3D biomimetic scaffolds platform potentiates culture of cancer stem cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Biomaterials. 2023 Sep 11;302:122323. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2023.122323. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer stem cells (CSCs) are crucial for tumorigenesis, metastasis, and therapy resistance in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). To further elucidate the mechanism underlying characteristics of CSCs and develop CSCs-targeted therapy, an efficient culture system that could expand and maintain CSCs is needed. CSCs reside in a complex tumor microenvironment, and three-dimensional (3D) culture systems of biomimetic scaffolds are expected to better support the growth of CSCs by recapitulating the biophysical prop...

Comprehensive analysis of subtypes and risk model based on complement system associated genes in ccRCC
CONCLUSIONS: Two distinct CS patterns were identified and were further analyzed in terms of infiltration of TME immune cells and immune escape, providing potential explanations for the impact on prognosis of ccRCC. Our CSscore prognostic model may offer a novel perspective in the management of ccRCC patients, and potentially other types of cancer as well.PMID:37717714 | DOI:10.1016/j.cellsig.2023.110888

HSP90 C-terminal domain inhibition promotes VDAC1 oligomerization via decreasing K274 mono-ubiquitination in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
In this study, we focused on the effect of the C-terminal domain of Hsp90 on VDAC1 oligomerization, ubiquitination, and VDAC1 channel activity. We found that Hsp90 C-terminal domain inhibitor Novobiocin promoted VDAC1 oligomerization, release of cytochrome c, and activated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. Atomic coarse particle modeling simulation revealed C-terminal domain of Hsp90α stabilized VDAC1 monomers. The purified VDAC1 was reconstituted into a planar lipid bilayer, and electrophysiology experiments of patch clamp showed that the Hsp90 C-terminal inhibitor Novobiocin increased VDAC1 channel conductance via promot...

Intratumoral injection of melatonin enhances tumor regression in cell line-derived and patient-derived xenografts of head and neck cancer by increasing mitochondrial oxidative stress
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 15;167:115518. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115518. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHead and neck squamous cell carcinoma present a high mortality rate. Melatonin has been shown to have oncostatic effects in different types of cancers. However, inconsistent results have been reported for in vivo applications. Consequently, an alternative administration route is needed to improve bioavailability and establish the optimal dosage of melatonin for cancer treatment. On the other hand, the use of patient-derived tumor models has transformed the field of drug research because they reflect the heterogenei...
