ARL15 and its multiple disease associations: Emerging functions and potential therapeutic applications
Curr Protein Pept Sci. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.2174/1389203724666230915123217. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTARL15 is a member of the RAS superfamily of small GTPases and is associated with several metabolic traits, including increased risk of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lipid metabolism disorders. The ARL15 gene encodes for an uncharacterized small GTP binding protein. Its precise role in human physiology remains unknown, but several genetic association studies have recognized different variants in this gene to be statistically associated with numerous traits and complex diseases. Here, we provided the unique features...

Monoamines' role in islet cell function and type 2 diabetes risk
Trends Mol Med. 2023 Sep 16:S1471-4914(23)00194-6. doi: 10.1016/j.molmed.2023.08.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe two monoamines serotonin and melatonin have recently been highlighted as potent regulators of islet hormone secretion and overall glucose homeostasis in the body. In fact, dysregulated signaling of both amines are implicated in β-cell dysfunction and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Serotonin is a key player in β-cell physiology and plays a role in expansion of β-cell mass. Melatonin regulates circadian rhythm and nutrient metabolism and reduces insulin release in human and rodent islets...

Health profile of workers from different industries in Singapore
CONCLUSION: Health issues are prevalent in the workforce and may affect work and employee safety. It is increasingly important for employees' health to be considered in risk assessments and prioritised in workplace safety and health management systems and strategies. Health promotion interventions should be targeted, and multilevel and multicomponent initiatives should be integrated with pre-existing occupational safety programmes.PMID:37721304 | DOI:10.4103/singaporemedj.SMJ-2021-414

Resveratrol ameliorates diabetic encephalopathy through PDE4D/PKA/Drp1 signaling
This study illustrated the role of PDE4D in DE and investigated whether resveratrol protected against DE via inhibiting PDE4D. db/db male mice and hippocampus cell line (HT22) were used to investigate the role of PDE4D and the protective effect of resveratrol on cognitive function under high glucose (HG). PDE4D overexpression or knockdown lentivirus and PKA specific inhibitor H89 were used to further identify the indispensable role of PDE4D/PKA signaling pathway in resveratrol's amelioration effect of neurotoxicity. Resveratrol attenuated cognitive impairment in db/db mice, reduced PDE4D protein, restored the impaired mito...

Effect of oral versus parenteral vitamin D3 supplementation on nuclear factor- κB and platelet aggregation in type 2 diabetic patients
In conclusion, restoring normal levels of vitamin D is an important determinant to maintain normal platelet function and reduce inflammation. Nevertheless, further long-term studies are still needed.PMID:37721213 | DOI:10.1139/cjpp-2022-0359

Management of Coeliac and Hepatic Artery Aneurysms: A Single Institution Experience of 84 Cases
CONCLUSION: Endovascular treatment is the preferred approach whenever technically possible. Despite higher post-operative morbidity, an open approach with vascular reconstruction using autologous or allogenic vascular grafts yields acceptable long term results.PMID:37722651 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2023.09.032

Integration of palliative care in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):1-4. doi: 10.6026/97320630019001. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOral Squamous cell Cancers (OSCC) is strongly associated with tobacco consumption. We here in present a case study of a OSCC patient who refused standard oncological care (SOC), to highlight the importance of integrating palliative care (PC) for improved patient outcomes. A 61 years male patient, with history of chewing tobacco for more than 20 years and diagnosed to have OSCC for 1.5 years presented with severe anaemia and a cauliflower-like growth (12 x 10 cm) in the left oral cavity and cheek with greenish-yellow discharge. Pus ...

Moderate and high-intensity interval training protect against diabetes-induced modulation of hepatic CD86 and CD206 expression associated with the amelioration of insulin resistance and inflammation in rats
Immunobiology. 2023 Sep 13;228(6):152745. doi: 10.1016/j.imbio.2023.152745. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes Mellitus (DM) can damage the function of metabolic tissues, including the liver. Liver macrophages are the first responders to tissue damage or exercise. We sought to determine whether eight weeks of interval training (HIIT & MIIT) protect against diabetes-induced modulation of hepatic CD86 and CD206 expression associated with the amelioration of insulin resistance and inflammation in rats. Thirty rats were divided into six groups, including a control group, MIIT, HIIT, DM, DM + MIIT, and DM + HIIT (n = 5 ...

Diabetes linked oral complications in south Indian cohorts
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):85-87. doi: 10.6026/97320630019085. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTDiabetes is characterized by elevated blood sugar and insulin resistance. In poorly controlled or uncontrolled diabetes, persistent hyperglycemia causes oral and systemic problems. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate biochemical indicators for oral health and diabetes using a fully automatic biochemistry analyzer which separates patient serum from blood samples. Data shows that diabetic oral complex patients showed high RBS, HbA1c, FBS, and PBSS. Thus, dental condition is linked to diabetes.PMID:37720287 | PMC:PMC10504521 | ...

Ethnicity and risk factors among Indian coronary artery disease patients
In this study, an attempt was made to investigate the distribution of coronary risk factors in male patients with coronary artery disease (CAD)(n=50 each) belonging to Jaat and Vaishya castes. A Significantly higher average height, waist and hip circumferences, glucose, and waist-height ratio were observed in Jaats compared to the Vaishyas (p=0.000). Mean BMI, total cholesterol (total-C) and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and lean body mass index (LBMI) were significantly higher in Vaishyas against Jaats (p=0.00). A significantly higher percentage of type 2 diabetes(T2DM) (p=0.03) and isolated hypertrigl...
