Electroacupuncture stimulating Zhongji (CV3), Guanyuan (CV4), and bilateral Dahe (KI12) attenuates inflammation in rats with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis induced by estradiol through inhibiting toll-like receptor 4 pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that EA could relieve pelvic pain and attenuate prostatic inflammation in estradiol-induced CNP rats. The underlying mechanism may be related to the inhibition of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway.PMID:37679984 | PMC:PMC10465839 | DOI:10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.20230608.001

Competitive ECL immunosensor for ultrasensitive 17 β-estradiol detection based on synergistic promotion strategy using CdSe-ZnSe nanocomposites
Talanta. 2023 Sep 5;267:125160. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.125160. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel competitive ECL immunosensor for detection of 17β-Estradiol (E2) has been fabricated successfully. CdSe-ZnSe nanocomposites (CdSe-ZnSe NCs) with high catalytic properties, large surface area and good conductivity were used synergistically as the ECL nanocarriers of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs). The ECL intensity of CdSe-ZnSe NCs increased and stabilized with luminol-PtNPs (luminol-PtNPs@CdSe-ZnSe NCs) because of electron transfer. To achieve the successful assembling of competitive ultrasensitive ECL immunosensor with hig...

Cystatin C-Based eGFR Changes during Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy in Transgender Individuals
CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort of transgender individuals, cystatin C-based eGFR increased with estradiol and anti-androgen therapy and decreased with testosterone therapy.PMID:37678248 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.0000000000000289

Effects of sex hormones on vascular reactivity in boys with hypospadias
CONCLUSION: In healthy boys, testosterone and 17β-estradiol promote a vasoconstrictor phenotype whereas in boys with hypospadias, these sex hormones reduce vasoconstriction, with androgens promoting vasorelaxation. Differences in baseline artery function may therefore be sex hormone independent and the impact of early-life variations in androgen exposure on vascular function needs further study.PMID:37672642 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad525

Overexpression of Pde4d in rat granulosa cells inhibits maturation and atresia of antral follicles to induce polycystic ovary
CONCLUSION: Upregulation of Pde4d may contribute to polycystic ovary syndrome by impeding follicle maturation and preventing apoptotic atresia.PMID:37673361 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbadis.2023.166869

Astrocytic Responses to Binge Alcohol Intake in the Mouse Hindbrain
Biol Pharm Bull. 2023;46(9):1194-1202. doi: 10.1248/bpb.b23-00140.ABSTRACTEthanol is the most commonly used toxic chemical in human cultures. Ethanol predominantly damages the brain causing various neurological disorders. Astrocytes are important cellular targets of ethanol in the brain and are involved in alcoholic symptoms. Recent studies have revealed the diversity of astrocyte populations in the brain. However, it is unclear how the different astrocyte populations respond to an excess of ethanol. Here we examined the effect of binge ethanol levels on astrocytes in the mouse brainstem and cerebellum. Ethanol administrat...

Spexin role in human granulosa cells physiology and PCOS: expression and negative impact on steroidogenesis and proliferation
Biol Reprod. 2023 Sep 2:ioad108. doi: 10.1093/biolre/ioad108. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpexin (SPX) is a novel neuropeptide and adipokine negatively correlated with obesity and insulin resistance. A recent study investigated expression and regulatory function of SPX in the hypothalamus and pituitary; however, the effect on ovarian function is still unknown. The aim of this study was to characterize the expression of SPX and its receptors, galanin receptors 2 and 3 (GALR2/3) in the human ovary and to study its in vitro effect on granulosa cells (GC) function. Follicular fluid (FF) and GC were obtained from normal weigh...

Potential risk of estrogenic compounds produced by water blooms to aquatic environment
In conclusion, our study documents undetectable or relatively low estrogenic potential of biomass extracts from both environmental freshwater blooms and studied laboratory cultured cyanobacterial and algae species. Nevertheless, in case of very high-density water blooms, even this low estrogenicity (detected for two cyanobacterial species) could lead to EEQ content in biomass reaching effect-based trigger values indicating potential risk, if recalculated per water volume at field sites. However, these levels would not occur in water under realistic environmental scenarios and the potential estrogenic effects would be most ...

Neuroprotective effects of goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) polysaccharides on depression-like behavior in ovariectomized rats: behavioral and biochemical evidence
CONCLUSION: This is the first study to show the antidepressant effect of LBP. Although additional research is needed, LBP may be considered a potential new antidepressant.PMID:37654035
