Online Interest for Electronic Cigarettes Using Google Trends in the UK: A Correlation Analysis
CONCLUSION: Google Trends may correspond to population-based prevalence of electronic cigarette use. The changing trends coincide with changing policy decisions. Google Trends based prediction for online interest in electronic cigarettes requires further validation so should currently be used in conjunction with other traditional methods of data collections.PMID:37671780 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2247056

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Nicotine Use: Nursing Implications for Patient Outcomes
J Addict Nurs. 2023 Jul-Sep 01;34(3):E74-E78. doi: 10.1097/JAN.0000000000000542.ABSTRACTTobacco use is a leading cause of cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and preventable death in the United States. The brains of individuals with nicotine dependence are characterized by damaged mesolimbic pathways in the medial portion of the limbic and frontal lobes, creating positive reinforcing mechanisms. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targets this neuroadaptation to improve smokers' nicotine-related outcomes, such as craving and smoking behavior, by depolarizing or hyperpolarizing the neurons of the brai...

Association between metal exposure from e-cigarette components and toxicity endpoints: A literature review
Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 2023 Aug 30:105488. doi: 10.1016/j.yrtph.2023.105488. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTElectronic cigarette is often promoted and perceived as an 'healthy' alternative compared to conventional cigarettes. However, growing body of evidence indicate the possible adverse health effect associated with e-cigarette. Here we reviewed the literature with a focus on metal exposure in relation to e-cigarette use and related toxicity endpoints. Twenty-nine studies were identified for full text screening after applying the screening criteria of which 5 in vitro studies and 11 epidemiological studies were included...

Comorbid psychiatric diagnoses and gaming preferences in US armed forces veterans receiving inpatient treatment for gambling disorder
Addict Behav. 2023 Aug 24;147:107840. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107840. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTArmed Forces Veterans are uniquely vulnerable to problem gambling and gambling disorder. Even so, research regarding the full clinical profile of veterans with gambling problems lags. Gambling activities vary widely from each other, but most gambling activities can be understood as either strategic (i.e., involving some measure of skill and decision-making as a part of the gambling practice) or non-strategic (i.e., gambling activities that are entirely based on chance). Prior works have found that gamblers that prefer str...

Nicotine perturbs the microbiota of brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens st ål Hemiptera: Delphinidae)
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Aug 25;264:115383. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacterial symbionts exhibiting co-evolutionary patterns with insect hosts play a vital role in the nutrient synthesis, metabolism, development, reproduction, and immunity of insects. The brown planthopper (BPH) has a strong ability to adapt to various environmental stresses and can develop resistance to broad-spectrum insecticides. We aimed to investigate whether gut symbionts of BPH play a major role in the detoxification of insecticides and host fitness in unfavorable environments. Nicotine-treated rice plants...

Psychometric properties and factor structure of the brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives among Spanish smokers from the general population
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first version of the B-WISDM validated to assess nicotine dependence with a multidimensional perspective within the Spanish culture. Results show adequate psychometric properties regarding its factor structure and measurement invariance across gender, supporting its utility to evaluate the motives driving tobacco use among Spanish smokers from the general population.PMID:37634340 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2023.107833
