Gastrointestinal Infection in South African Children under the Age of 5 years: A Mini Review
CONCLUSIONS: This mini review outlines the epidemiology and trends relating to parasitic, viral, and bacterial agents responsible for gastroenteritis in children in South Africa. An increase in sequence-independent diagnostic approaches will improve the identification of pathogens to resolve undiagnosed cases of gastroenteritis. Emerging state and national surveillance systems should focus on improving the identification of gastrointestinal pathogens in children and the development of further vaccines against gastrointestinal pathogens.PMID:37663241 | PMC:PMC10469397 | DOI:10.1155/2023/1906782

Dimedone nanoparticle as a promising approach against toxoplasmosis: In vitro and in vivo evaluation
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 2;166:115356. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115356. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTToxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite, has shown drug resistance and therapeutic failure in recent years. Dimedone (DIM) has been introduced as a new chemical compound with anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective role of DIM nanoparticles in an animal model of toxoplasmosis. Cytotoxicity of DIM on Vero cell line assessed using MTT, and the effect of DIM on Toxoplasma gondii was evaluated by counting the number of parasites compared to the co...

Biphasic pleural mesothelioma in a goat
Can Vet J. 2023 Sep;64(9):828-832.ABSTRACTAn 8-year-old Saanen goat doe was seen for inappetence, tachycardia, and intermittent bluish-grey discoloration of the oral mucous membranes. On physical examination, the goat was mildly tachypneic and tachycardic, with reduced sounds auscultated on the left side of the thorax. Euthanasia was elected. Necropsy revealed an infiltrative, multinodular mass within the left thoracic cavity and innumerable small, tan nodules disseminated across the pleura of the lungs, thoracic walls, and diaphragm. Upon histologic examination, the mass was composed of highly pleomorphic, fusiform to pol...

Increased susceptibility to encephalitozoonosis associated with mixed Th1/Th2 profile and M1/M2 profile in mice immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide
Exp Parasitol. 2023 Sep 2:108606. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2023.108606. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEncephalitozoon cuniculi is a unicellular, spore-forming, obligate intracellular eukaryote belonging to the phylum Microsporidia. It is known to infect mainly immunocompromised and immunocompetent mammals, including humans. The parasite-host relationship has been evaluated using both in vitro cell culturing and animal models. For example, Balb/c and C57BL/6 mouse strains have been used interchangeably, although the latter has been considered more susceptible due to the higher fungal load observed after infection. In the pres...
