Continued challenges in pediatric anesthesia during COVID-19 in 2022: An international survey from the pediatric anesthesia COVID-19 collaborative
CONCLUSION: Our study found that COVID-19 has continued to impact pediatric anesthesiology. There are major discrepancies between what anesthesiologists believe are important for job satisfaction and faculty retention compared to implemented initiatives. Data from this survey provide insight for institutions and departments for addressing these challenges.PMID:37732382 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14762

Influence of Intravenous S-Ketamine on the Pharmacokinetics of Oral Morphine in Healthy Volunteers
CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous S-ketamine inhibited the metabolism of oral morphine and delayed its absorption, resulting in a net reduction in the exposure to morphine during the first 1.5 hours. Intravenous S-ketamine may delay the absorption and impair the efficacy of orally administered analgesics and other drugs.PMID:37733945 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006640

Administration of Milrinone Following Tetralogy of Fallot Repair Increases Postoperative Volume Administration Without Improving Cardiac Output
CONCLUSIONS: The use of milrinone within the first 72 hours following TOF repair is associated with more frequent administration of volume, a positive association between a higher total dose of postoperative milrinone and the amount of postoperative volume administered, a higher heart rate, and a lower blood pressure, but is not associated with improved cardiac output.PMID:37733944 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006662

Arterial Hyperoxemia During Cardiopulmonary Bypass Was Not Associated With Worse Postoperative Pulmonary Function: A Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation found no clinically significant association between Pao2 during CPB and postoperative lung function. Similarly, there was no association between Pao2 during CPB and lactate levels, postoperative renal function, or other exploratory outcomes.PMID:37733624 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006627

Programmed intermittent epidural bolus in maintenance of epidural labor analgesia: a literature review
AbstractProgrammed intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB), administered by the infusion pump programmed to deliver boluses of epidural solution at certain intervals, is gradually gaining more attention as a technique to maintain the labor analgesia in recent years. Many studies find that it may have some advantages when compared with other methods. However, its exact effectiveness and optimal regimen are still unclear. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for studies published between January 2010 and June 2022. Of the 263 publications identified, 27 studies we...

Structural and histochemical aspects of the Gymnotus carapo tegument (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes)
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Sep 18;95(4):e20191259. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320191259. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe present study aims to structurally and histochemically characterize the Gymnotus carapo tegument. 30 specimens were captured and slaughtered by spinal section with anesthesia. The observation was carried out with a stereoscopic microscope and the body surface was photographed. Fragments of the dorsal, ventral and lateral region were fixed in Bouin's solution for 12 hours and subsequently preserved in 70% alcohol. They were subsequently observed in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The preparation for SEM ...

Patient Experiences With Hand Surgery in the Office Versus Ambulatory Surgery Center
Conclusions Though costs and time off of work differed between the two groups due to the different procedures in either setting, patient satisfaction metrics were comparable. While patient satisfaction depends on the operating physician, these results demonstrate that patients treated in-office and in an ASC have similar levels of approval with their hand surgery care.PMID:37727164 | PMC:PMC10506845 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.43763

Benefits of laparoscopy-assisted ileostomy in colorectal cancer patients with bowel obstruction
CONCLUSION: Laparoscopy-assisted ileostomy is a safe and efficient method that produces lower visual analog scale scores, better intraoperative visualization for effective adhesion lysis, and similar operative time compared with conventional ileostomy.PMID:37727726 | PMC:PMC10505990 | DOI:10.12998/wjcc.v11.i24.5660

Pain management for liver transplant recipients
We present current evidence-based literature that reviews optimal pain management strategies for this challenging patient demographic.RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple studies have shown that thoracic epidurals provide superior pain control in open hepatic resections. Recent data suggests thoracic epidurals may be safely considered in select liver transplant recipients with normal preoperative coagulation status; however, this evidence is limited, and further studies are needed. When the risks of coagulopathy prohibit epidural placement, truncal blocks such as transversus abdominis plane blocks or quadratus lumborum blocks and abd...

A neonate with aseptic cutaneous necrosis related to the migration of the proximal central venous catheter infusion port
We report a case of aseptic cutaneous necrosis from extravasation of calcium chloride at the proximal port of a central venous catheter (CVC). A right internal jugular CVC was placed with ultrasound guidance using contemporary guidelines for size and insertion site. Catheter migration occurred concurrent with development of postoperative anasarca. Four days later, leakage of infusate with skin necrosis was noted at the insertion site. Despite initial proper positioning, catheter ports can migrate out of intravascular structures due to postprocedural subcutaneous edema. Intravascular confirmation should be performed regular...

Validity of the modified-Distraction-Short-Scale and Verbal-Numeric-Anxiety-Fear-Rating-Scale for children in a preoperative setting
CONCLUSION: The modified-Distraction-Short-Scale and the Verbal-Numeric-Anxiety-Fear-Rating-Scale are simple and valid tools for assessing children's perioperative anxiety or fear and evaluating coping behavior. These results suggest that both scales are useful tools for routine clinical practice and research.PMID:37728169 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14765

Vomiting after intrathecal chemotherapy under anesthesia in pediatric patients with hematologic cancers: A cohort study
CONCLUSION: A high incidence of vomiting was observed within 24 h after intrathecal chemotherapy under propofol deep sedation. Risk factors for this outcome were established (being female, consolidation phase of treatment, and previous kinetosis), and evidence suggested that the Eberhart score was not suitable for the studied population.PMID:37727104 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14756
