How to optimize the use of diuretics in patients with heart failure?
Kardiol Pol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.33963/v.kp.97315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConsidering the pathophysiology and the clinical presentation of heart failure, the use of diuretics or drugs with diuretic properties are indispensable for an adequate management of heart failure patients. However, in clinical practice, fluid expansion is often undiagnosed and diuretic therapy is not always adequately titrated. Today, several drug classes with diuretic properties are available in addition to classical thiazides, thiazide-like and loop diuretics. The purpose of this short review is to discuss the different ways to optimize di...

Why Is Religious Attendance Linked to More Anxiety in U.S. South Asians? The Mediating Role of Congregational Neglect
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that congregational neglect plays an important intervening role in the connection between religious service attendance and anxiety among U.S. South Asians. The findings move beyond description, flagging a relevant social process which underlies the relationship. By recognizing the potential adverse effects of religious attendance on anxiety in this population, it may be possible to develop interventions aimed at enhancing social inclusion in South Asian religious communities. In addition to practical implications, this study highlights the need for further research on how communal ...

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 inhibitor downregulates microRNA-130a-3p expression in hepatocytes to alleviates atherosclerosis progression
This study explores the effect and potential mechanism of PCSK9 inhibitors on lipid metabolism and coronary atherosclerosis. HepG2 cells were incubated with PCSK9 inhibitor. ApoE-/- mice were fed with a high fat to construct an atherosclerosis model, and then treated with PCSK9 inhibitor (8 mg/kg for 8 w). PCSK9 inhibitor downregulated microRNA (miRNA)-130a-3p expression in a dose-dependent manner. And, miR-130a-3p could bind directly to the 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR) region of LDLR to down-regulate LDLR expression in HepG2 cells, as confirmed by the luciferase reporter gene assay. In addition, miR-130a-3p overexpress...

A Case of McLeod's Syndrome Presenting with Severe Decompensated Heart Failure
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2023 Sep 14;19(1):75-78. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1164. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMcLeod's syndrome (MLS) is an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the XK gene with neurological manifestations as well as cardiomyopathy. This is a case of acute exacerbation of heart failure in a 44-year-old White male with a confirmed diagnosis of MLS, which was managed with guideline-directed medical therapy and placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator with recovery in ejection fraction.PMID:37720304 | PMC:PMC10503528 | DOI:10.14797/mdcvj.1164
