Spirituality and heart failure: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the extreme heterogeneity of the populations included, of the definition of spirituality and religiosity, and of the interventions in the few studies that included it, all the studies reported some positive associations with the outcomes examined. Spirituality/religiosity is an aspect not generally taken into account in the usual practice of medicine and can potentially contribute to improving the conditions of patients with HF, a chronic disease with unfavorable prognosis.PMID:37737928 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02557-x

Fisetin, a potential skin rejuvenation drug that eliminates senescent cells in the dermis
Biogerontology. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s10522-023-10064-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccumulation of senescent fibroblasts, chronic inflammation, and collagen remodeling due to aging-related secretory phenotypes have been hypothesized to cause age-related skin aging, which results in wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity, thus compromising appearance attractiveness. However, the rejuvenating effects of removing senescent cells from the human skin and the efficacy of related therapeutic agents remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of fisetin, a potential anti-aging component found in various edible fruits ...

Older Men, The Patient-Physician Relationship, and Patient Involvement
This study investigates older men's experiences with physicians, their perceptions of the patient-physician relationship, and the extent to which they wished to be involved in their health care. In-depth, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 23 men 55-96 years of age. Findings reveal that older men want to participate in the medical encounter and be involved in their care, contradicting earlier work suggesting that older adults prefer to be passive patients. Preferred involvement, however, varied along a continuum ranging from "quasi-involvement" to "taking charge", with most participants being in the middle, prefer...

Type 2 diabetes mellitus increases postoperative recurrence risk in Chinese patients with chronic rhinosinusitis
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated FBG levels may significantly influenced the postoperative recurrence of CRS in Chinese patients, and T2DM was an independent risk factor for recurrence.PMID:37737711 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2023.2255222

Determining optimal cochlear implant electrode array with OTOPLAN
CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings revealed that CDL varies widely, which is consistent with previous studies. To achieve better speech perception, surgeons should select the appropriate length of CI electrode array based on the individual's CDL. Preoperative measurement of each CDL by OTOPLAN, which is clinically feasible and comparable to postoperative evaluation, can be used to ensure selection of the appropriate electrode array length.PMID:37737708 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2023.2256790

Clinical correlation research of 3D reconstruction of retrolabyrinthine space based on HRCT of temporal bone
Conclusions and Significance: 3D reconstruction of CT images clearly displayed the detailed structures of the temporal bone. Surgical adaptability of the retrolabyrinthine approach can be assessed preoperatively by image and other methods, and anatomical parameters play an important role in the retrolabyrinthine space. Therefore, this study helps to skeleton the bone as much as possible to expand the surgical space, so that the surgeon can contact the anatomical structure more diversified to expand the surgical indications.PMID:37737694 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2023.2255642

Anti-craving Medications for Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment in the Emergency Department: A Systematic Review of Direct Evidence for SEAM GRACE
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, there are few studies directly examining the efficacy of anti-craving medication for AUD in the ED, although the limited evidence that exists is supportive of naltrexone pharmacotherapy, particularly extended-release injection formulation. Additional randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are necessary for substantive direct evidence on anti-craving medication initiation in the ED.PMID:37735346 | DOI:10.1111/acem.14806

Artificial Intelligence for Drug Discovery: Are We There Yet?
Annu Rev Pharmacol Toxicol. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1146/annurev-pharmtox-040323-040828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDrug discovery is adapting to novel technologies such as data science, informatics, and artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate effective treatment development while reducing costs and animal experiments. AI is transforming drug discovery, as indicated by increasing interest from investors, industrial and academic scientists, and legislators. Successful drug discovery requires optimizing properties related to pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and clinical outcomes. This review discusses the use of AI in ...

Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteogenomics: New Therapeutic Opportunities for Precision Medicine
Annu Rev Pharmacol Toxicol. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1146/annurev-pharmtox-022723-113921. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProteogenomics refers to the integration of comprehensive genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic measurements from the same samples with the goal of fully understanding the regulatory processes converting genotypes to phenotypes, often with an emphasis on gaining a deeper understanding of disease processes. Although specific genetic mutations have long been known to drive the development of multiple cancers, gene mutations alone do not always predict prognosis or response to targeted therapy. The benefit of p...

Orthodontic Management of Severe Hypodontia and Impacted Maxillary Second Molars in a Patient with Sotos Syndrome
Cleft Palate Craniofac J. 2023 Sep 21:10556656231201834. doi: 10.1177/10556656231201834. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSotos syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by distinct craniofacial features, overgrowth in childhood, and impaired intellectual development. We herein report the successful orthodontic treatment of a 14-year-old boy with Sotos syndrome caused by a heterozygous mutation in the NSD1 gene. He showed severe hypodontia, impaction of the maxillary second molars and a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship. Orthodontic management, including space control by protraction of the maxillary first molars and...

NKG2A discriminates natural killer cells with a suppressed phenotype in pediatric acute leukemia
In conclusion, high expression of NKG2A dominates NK cell phenotypes from pediatric BCP-ALL patients, indicating that NKG2A could be targeted in therapies for this patient group.PMID:37738462 | DOI:10.1093/jleuko/qiad112

Clinical significance of human neutrophil antigen-1 antibodies in children with neutropenia
This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of 402 children with neutropenia to identify differences between those with and without HNA-1 antibodies (HNA1abs). HNAabs in sera were detected by granulocyte immunofluorescence testing using flow cytometry. Relative fluorescence intensity (RFI) values were used to divide patients into positive (PG, n = 302), borderline (BG, n = 34), and negative (NG, n = 66) groups. The antibodies reacted to HNA-1a alone (59%), HNA-1b alone (1%), and HNA-1a/1b (40%). The PG had a significantly lower absolute neutrophil count before definitive diagnosis and a 1.6- to 2-times greater risk of...
