400 Patients Sue Kentucky Hospital and 11 Cardiologists Over Unnecessary Procedures
After undergoing more than two dozen cardiac procedures over a period of twenty years at St. Joseph Hospital in London, Kentucky, a patient was told by an outside cardiologist in Lexington that a recent procedure had been performed unnecessarily on an artery that was barely blocked. “I would have not carried out this procedure,” the cardiologist, Michael R. Jones, wrote in a letter to the patient. The story is recounted  in an article published on Sunday in USA Today and the Louisville Courier-Journal, about the latest and perhaps the biggest case yet to surface over unnecessary cardiac procedures. Interventional Cardiology And The Rejection Of Science
–Prominent interventional cardiologist says clinical trials are slowing progress In their eagerness to embrace a glorious future of ever more spectacular technology-based advances, interventional cardiology— a subspecialty never exactly known for caution, patience, or self reflection— is poised to reject science, evidence-based medicine, and randomized controlled trials. “Generating and publishing evidence is a tedious job,”...Click here to continue reading...

Side branch sacrifice : Smart cardiologists shall do it scientifically !
This study has taught us most side branches retain good FFR give us more confidence to sacrifice the sibling branches of main stem arteries. Final message Practicing cardiology in a truly professional way in cath lab can be tricky. We need to disrespect most of the side branches .Believe in your gut feeling (or your consultant’s.) If you are a sensitive scientific cardiologist do FFR pre / post procedure to the side branch .If compromised physiologically try probing the jailed struts and dilate one of them in absolute blindness , of course with a strong conviction of doing good for the science’s  sake. A Resea...

History of cardiology : A soulful story of “ Dr.Thomas ” and his BT shunt
History is rarely kind to the original heroes in the scientific world. The classical Blalock-Taussig shunt,(BT shunt) the term we heard for the first time in the early clinical years of MBBS .We know, it as a dramatic cure (Palliative  though)  for the commonest congenital cyanotic heart disease -Tetralogy of Fallot. Now, half a century later, came to know, there is a gripping  story of an oppressed black hero behind this famous cardiac surgery. This post is  all about the  fascinating life of  Vivien Thomas,  a humble carpenter’s son from Nashville. While he dreamed to become a doctor, circumstances and fate h...

With deep regret, reporting the demise of Dr. KA Abraham, cardiologist, par excellence in our part of the world(Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.) He was a man of great knowledge,  wisdom, and integrity and was an inspiration to generations of cardiologists like us. Dr.K.A Abraham 1942-2021 A life, that was fully dedicated to all those heart patients, many of them sick children in his den, the Railway hospital, Chennai for three decades. Though, never had the privilege to be associated with him either directly, nor does he know me, one could feel instantly the greatness and simplicity in him. It’s 1994-95, vividly recal...

Calibrated PTCA guidewires : A simple Innovation can make cardiologist life lot easier !
It is estimated nearly half a  million PCIs are done all over the globe every year .Evaluating diagnostic angiogram is a critical  vital step, but  often times it is given less time and left to fellows .This is done mostly offline by Image  processing software. Curiously , lesion assessment  becomes a causality to the   visual acuity .It ends up  with lot  of whims , intuition and bloated egos of senior cardiologists ! Technical issues The fundamental flaw in the  lesion assessment is ,there is  a dissociation in choosing the  “best view”  for lesion morphology  and  length  . Size need not be ...

UpToDate? Information my cardiologists didn ’t have.
I’ve always felt lucky and relieved when a cardiologist told me I seemed to be fine despite my heart condition. The electrical block is more commonly seen among older, adult patients where it presents […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.
