The world’s premiere interventional cardiology meeting now features cardiologists wearing boxing shorts and gloves. The Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting in Washington, DC kicked off  with a “Saturday Night Fights” theme for its debate session, and the participants– nearly all greying, eminent male interventional cardiologists– adopted the theme whole-heartedly. Poignant moments in History of cardiology : James Mackenzie ’ s dying heart !
1908, Going back on the time machine, more than 100 years ago, world war I was all set to begin, and the great Titanic was being built in the Belfast shipyard. A parallel histroy is being created in cardiology. This is a brief story of Dr. James Mackenzie, a general practitioner from a remote Scottish village who ended up with the title of the father of British cardiology. Dr. Harvey might have invented circulation, but it was Mackenzie who taught the science of arterial pulse and wrote a classic on the topic to the new medical world. He was able to decode the secrets of the jugular venous pulse as well and diagnosed va...

You are a foolish cardiologist . . . don’t corrput young minds !
In one of my  meetings , I told a small gathering  , that regular exercise can shrink atherosclerotic plaques and regress CAD. I also quoted , a recent  large  study which  has proven this fact convincingly ! I concluded, simple regular exercise  and other life style changes with  risk factor correction  may convert a 90% lesion to 70 or even 50 % . I stressed importance of this study and asked my colleagues to avoid misuse of the much hyped  Angioplasties . When many  seemed to agree with me , one  seemingly angry  interventional cardiologist questioned me, and  asked for  the name of the  study , and in wh...

Survey: Yearly Pay For Cardiologists Hits $542,000
A newly-released survey finds that compensation for cardiologists grew to $542,000 in 2014. This represents a $30,000 increase from 2013 and brings the total close to the previous high of $548,000 in 2012. The increase may reflect an over-representation of private physicians in the survey released by MedAxiom Consulting, which bills itself as the nation’s top cardiovascular service...Click here to continue reading...

Cardiologists ’ Dream Device? – The Withings BPM Core and the Viatom Armfit+ Joint Review
1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women have hypertension worldwide, the WHO estimates. As for the most common arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation (AFib), it affects some 33.5 million individuals globally; with its prevalence expected to double by 2030. These cardiovascular conditions need regular monitoring so as to prevent severe complications. For instance, hypertension can lead to heart and kidney failure, while AFib can lead to stroke. For long, monitoring these conditions relied on measurements taken from bulky devices available only in medical facilities; a sphygmomanometer (or blood pressure monitor) for hypertension and an E...

Are Cardiologists Worried About Being Accused Of Unnecessary PCI?
In the last week two cases highlighted, yet again, the continuing shift in standards regarding PCI. In his interventional cardiology blog on CardioExchange, Rick Lange asks cardiologists: Could You Be Accused of Doing Unnecessary PCI? “Public confidence is eroding as the number of reports of physician suspensions and monetary penalties for unnecessary PCIs grow. Accordingly, patients are questioning use of PCI, even when it is indicated and advisable.” …. “Have investigations into unnecessary stenting changed your interventional practice? How so?”

Prof Montage 3 minute cardiology
The pleomorphic education revolution is upon us In the FOAMed age I am constantly amazed at the resourcefulness of medical educators globally to produce high quality, entertaining, thought-provoking, stimulating and controversial multimedia…for free. We are throwing off the shackles of peer review and boldly placing both feet in the anarchistic torrent of crowd-sourced education, feedback, commentary and response. As technology develops; broadband access to data improves and educators embrace the new medium – we will see an exponential growth in alternate teaching methods. Prof Montage is a cardiologist practi...
