Cervical laminoplasty versus laminectomy and posterior cervical fusion for cervical myelopathy: propensity-matched analysis of 24-month outcomes from the Quality Outcomes Database
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with PCF, laminoplasty was associated with decreased blood loss, decreased length of hospitalization, and higher rates of home discharge. At 3 months, laminoplasty was associated with a higher rate of return to baseline activities. At 24 months, laminoplasty was associated with greater improvements in neck disability. Otherwise, laminoplasty and PCF shared similar outcomes for functional status, pain, quality of life, and satisfaction. Laminoplasty and PCF achieved similar neck pain scores, suggesting that moderate preoperative neck pain may not necessarily be a contraindication for laminoplasty.PMID:...

Adverse effects of frailty on the outcomes of surgery for degenerative cervical myelopathy: results from a prospective multicenter international data set of 757 patients
CONCLUSIONS: Increasing frailty is associated with worse baseline functional and quality of life measures in patients undergoing surgery for DCM. Frailty does not affect the magnitude of improvement in outcome measures after surgery, but reduces the chance of achieving the MCID for functional impairment significantly. Preoperative frailty assessment can therefore help guide clinicians in managing expectations after surgery for DCM. Potentially modifiable factors should be optimized in frail patients preoperatively to enhance functional outcomes.PMID:37728372 | DOI:10.3171/2023.6.SPINE23461

Effects of wearing an opaque or transparent face mask on the perception of facial expressions: A comparative study between Japanese school-aged children and adults
This study aimed to determine the negative influence of mask-wearing on reading emotions of adult faces by Japanese school-aged children, compared to Japanese adults. We also examined whether this negative influence could be alleviated by using a transparent face mask instead of an opaque one (surgical mask). The performance on reading emotions was measured using emotion categorization and emotion intensity rating tasks for adult faces. As per the findings, the accuracy of emotion recognition in children was impaired for various facial expressions (disgust, fear, happy, neutral, sad, and surprise faces), except for angry f...

< em > Hannaella oleicumulans < /em > sp. nov. and < em > Hannaella higashiohmiensis < /em > sp. nov., two novel oleaginous basidiomycetous yeast species
Int J Syst Evol Microbiol. 2023 Sep;73(9). doi: 10.1099/ijsem.0.006027.ABSTRACTThree strains of novel oleaginous yeast species were isolated from soil samples collected in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) of the rRNA genes indicated that these novel yeast species are members of the genus Hannaella. The results of molecular phylogenetic analysis indicated that strains 38-3 and 8s1 were closely related to Hannaella oryzae. They differed by 10 nucleotide substitutions and one gap (1.77 %) in the D1/D2 region of the LSU of the...

Two cases of allergy with mung bean sprouts
Arerugi. 2023;72(8):1046-1050. doi: 10.15036/arerugi.72.1046.ABSTRACTPatient 1 was a female patient in her teens who presented with swelling of the lips and oral discomfort after consuming mung bean sprouts. She had a history of this reaction since the age of 6 years and showed positive on a prick-to-prick test for mung bean sprouts. Patient 2 was a male patient in his twenties who also showed positive for mung bean sprouts as well as soybean sprout. Both patients were positive for IgE specific to birch, Gly m4, and Bet v1.Mung beans belong to the PR-10 family because they contain the allergenic component, Vig r1. A cross ...

Evaluation the effect of dietary vitamin E, sesamin and thymoquinone bioactive compounds on immunological response, intestinal traits and MUC-2 gene expression in broiler Japanese quails ( < em > Coturnix japonica < /em > )
Anim Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 20:1-11. doi: 10.1080/10495398.2023.2259437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current study was performed to determine the effect of dietary vitamin E, sesamin and thymoquinone bioactive lignans derived from sesame and black seed on immunological response, intestinal traits and Mucin2 gene expression in broiler quails. Three hundred and fifty (one days-old) quails were allotted to seven dietary treatments with five replicates as an experimental randomized design study. Treatments were basal diet as a control, control +100 and +200 mg of vitamin E, sesamin and thymoquinone per each kg of diet resp...

Complexity and function of family involvement in advance care planning: A qualitative study of perspectives from people living with advanced cancer, family members and healthcare professionals
CONCLUSIONS: Two mechanisms of how family involvement may enable goal-concordant care were identified: family members' support provision and their preparation for realising patients' wishes. Healthcare professionals should assess family's readiness to engage in advance care planning, and the time required to prepare them for the process.PMID:37723885 | DOI:10.1177/02692163231194202

Right amygdala and caudate activation patterns predict implicit attitudes toward people with autism spectrum disorders and physical disabilities, respectively
In this study, we focused on implicit attitudes toward people with ASD and physical disabilities, which are more visible than ASD, and investigated whether implicit attitudes were predicted by using neural activity with multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) in the prejudice network. Thirty-six, right-handed, Japanese, university students without disabilities participated. Two implicit association tests (IAT) toward people with ASD and physical disabilities revealed negative implicit attitudes. In the MRI scanner, participants performed a one-back task by using the same picture sets of IATs to examine their neural responses to...
