Alzheimer's Disease as A Viral Infectious Disease: Revisiting the Infectious Hypothesis
Ageing Res Rev. 2023 Sep 11:102068. doi: 10.1016/j.arr.2023.102068. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's disease (AD) represents the most frequent type of dementia in elderly people. Two major forms of the disease exist: sporadic - the causes of which have not yet been fully understood - and familial - inherited within families from generation to generation, with a clear autosomal dominant transmission of mutations in Presenilin 1 (PSEN1), 2 (PSEN2) or Amyloid Precursors Protein (APP) genes. The main hallmark of AD consists of extracellular deposits of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide and intracellular deposits of the hyper...

Total electron yield (TEY) efficiency of sp < sup > 2 < /sup > and sp < sup > 3 < /sup > carbon atoms in the TEY-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of 1,4,7,10-alkyltetracenes
Anal Sci. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s44211-023-00421-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTX-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) in the CK region of 1,4,7,10-alkyltetracenes, which are composed of sp2-C atoms in the tetracene ring and sp3-C atoms in the alkyl-chains, are measured using the total electron yield (TEY) and theoretically analyzed by DFT calculations to quantitatively investigate the π* and σ* peak intensities in the TEY-CK-XANES. The calculated π*/σ* peak intensity ratios are well approximated by the linear functions passing through the origin as a function of the sp2-C fraction, which is expressed as sp...

Nanobody based immunoassay for alpha fetal protein detection using streptavidin-conjugated polymerized horseradish peroxidase for signal amplification
Anal Sci. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s44211-023-00423-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) offers several advantages, including simple operation, high throughput, and low cost, making it an ideal immunoassay method for efficient screening of disease-related biomarkers in clinical samples. However, the traditional colorimetric ELISA has relatively low sensitivity, which promotes the continuous emergence of various novel signal amplification technologies. In this work, we fused the AFP-specific nanobody (A1) with the streptavidin-binding peptide (SBP) to develop a fusion protein (A1-S...

Tirzepatide immunogenicity on pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety: analysis of data from Phase 3 studies
CONCLUSIONS: Immunogenicity did not impact tirzepatide pharmacokinetics or efficacy. Majority hypersensitivity or injection site reactions experienced by TE ADA+ patients were mild to moderate in severity.PMID:37700637 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad532

Effectiveness of cefmetazole versus meropenem for invasive urinary tract infections caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing < em > Escherichia coli < /em >
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2023 Sep 13:e0051023. doi: 10.1128/aac.00510-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCefmetazole is active against extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBLEC) and is a potential candidate for carbapenem-sparing therapy. This multicenter, observational study included patients hospitalized for invasive urinary tract infection due to ESBLEC between March 2020 and November 2021 at 10 facilities in Japan, for whom either cefmetazole or meropenem was initiated as a definitive therapy within 96 h of culture collection and continued for at least 3 d. Outcomes included clinical and micr...

Subtropical Mode Water south of Japan impacts typhoon intensity
Sci Adv. 2023 Sep 15;9(37):eadi2793. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adi2793. Epub 2023 Sep 13.ABSTRACTSubtropical Mode Water (STMW), characterized by vertically uniform temperature of ~17°C, is distributed horizontally over 5000 kilometers at the 100- to 500-meter depths in the subtropical North Pacific Ocean. Its formation and spreading fluctuate in relation to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Kuroshio path variation, but the feedback from STMW on the sea surface temperature (SST) and the overlying atmosphere remains unclear. Using Argo profiling float data, we show that STMW south of Japan, whose thickness varies decadally,...

Incidence of Hypophosphatemia After Intravenous Administration of Iron: A Matching-Adjusted Indirect Comparison of Data from Japanese Randomized Controlled Trials
CONCLUSIONS: Direct comparison of patient-level data and a MAIC from two RCTs in Japanese patients with heavy menstrual bleeding indicated that hypophosphatemia is less frequent in patients treated with FDI than those with FCM or SFO. Results are in agreement with RCTs comparing FDI and FCM in patients with various etiologies conducted in the USA and Europe.PMID:37702931 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02591-1

Lipoproteins, Cholesterol, and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in East Asians and Europeans
J Atheroscler Thromb. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.5551/jat.RV22013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOne fifth of the world population live in East Asia comprising Japan, Korea, and China where ischemic heart disease, a major component of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), is the second most frequent cause of death. Each of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), remnant lipoproteins, and lipoprotein(a), summarized as non-high-density lipoproteins (non-HDL) or apolipoprotein B (apoB) containing lipoproteins, causes ASCVD. However, a significant proportion of the evidence on lipoproteins and lipoprotein cholesterol with risk of ...
