Sustainable electricity consumption in South Africa: the impacts of tourism and economic growth
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 12. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28856-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current study examines sustainable electricity consumption for economic growth in a small open and tourist economy. The energy-tourism nexus is evaluated for the relationship between sustainable electricity consumption and the international tourist arrival for the South African economy. The present study leverages on annual frequency data for South Africa from 1995 to 2019 for empirical analysis using the ARDL technique. Accordingly, empirical findings indicate a significant direct connection between the sustainable ...

Palladium-Catalyzed Fluorinative Bifunctionalization of Aziridines and Azetidines with gem-Difluorocyclopropanes
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Aug 12:e202310283. doi: 10.1002/anie.202310283. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn unprecedented Pd-catalyzed fluorinative bifunctionalization of aziridines and azetidines was successfully developed via regioselective C-C and C-F bond cleavage of gem-difluorocyclopropanes, leading to various β,β'-bisfluorinated amines and β,γ-bisfluorinated amines. This reaction was achieved by incorporating a 2-fluorinated allyl group and a fluorine atom scissored from gem-difluorocyclopropane in 100% atom economy for the first time. The mechanistic investigations indicated that the reaction underwent amine ...

Study of synergistic effects induced by novel base composites on heavy metals removal and pathogen inactivation
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 9:139718. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139718. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe green-collar strategies for nanomaterial synthesis with novel structural competencies have received significant attention in nanotechnology owing to their potential benefits. The utilization of silica nanoparticles for wastewater treatment through heavy metal ions remediation is the focal point of the present study. With this intent, silica was extracted from bagasse ash by the sol-gel method and modified using chitosan. Chemical and physical characteristics of silica(S), silica/Chitosan (SCs), were reckoned through X-...

Expert laparoscopist performance on virtual reality simulation tasks with and without haptic features
CONCLUSION: Results showed higher performance in accuracy, efficient instrument motion, and avoidance of excessive traction force on selected tasks performed on VR simulator with haptic feedback compared to those performed without haptics feedback. Laparoscopic surgeons interpreted machine-generated haptic cues appropriately and resulted in better performance with VR task requirements. However, our results do not demonstrate an advantage in skills acquisition, which requires additional study.PMID:37563347 | DOI:10.1007/s00464-023-10321-5

Research progress of MOFs/carbon nanocomposites on promoting ORR in microbial fuel cell cathodes
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 10. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29169-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the rapid development of the economy, energy demand is more urgent. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have the advantages of non-toxic, safety, and environmental protection, and are considered the ideal choice for the next generation of energy storage equipment. However, the slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on MFC air cathodes and the high cost of traditional platinum (Pt) catalysts hinder their practical application, so there is a need to develop efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts as alterna...
